Ranieri is simply trying to ruin Giovinco. The game was stacked against us in the second half and we were being outplayed, so what does Ranieri do? He brings on Giovinco again when he knows he won't have any support to help him out there. He either sits on the bench or comes on when the odds are stacked against us and him, or when it's clear he will only make a minimal impact. Isn't that taking a risk that Giovinco will simply lose a lot of confidence by being left stranded out there? I mean, if we want the player to do well and we don't want to "risk" him, why throw him out in the sharks without any help? Makes zero fucking sense to me.

Then these other pointless substitutions... too late to make an impact. Might as well not sub anybody as to prevent disrupting the mediocre chemistry of the team. Bringing on a hapless Marchionni for the last 8 minutes is like waiving the white flag... we surrender, just don't shoot us dead with a goal. Ranieri doesn't make sense, he's a footballing terrorist, an infidel, a deranged old man whom I hate.
That's why he's called RUINeri :cheesy:

Solid performance with no outfield players standing out. Grades reflect that.

Manninger 7.5

Grygera 6
Mellberg 6.5
Chiellini 6.5
Molinaro 6

Camoranesi 6.5
Sissoko 6.5
Marchisio 6.5
Nedved 6

Del Piero 6
Iaquinta 6

Ranieri 6
It's hard to get too excited about this match to put much effort into the ratings. So what I'll do is this:

Manninger - 7.5
- MoM. Good instincts. Good saves. About as good of a match as he's played for us. And this is the best we've seen from non-Gigi play since Abbiati was on a tear for us.

Grygera - 5.5 - Mostly silent.

Mellberg - 6.5 - Mostly did what he needed to do.

Chiellini - 6.5 - Did what you expect of him.

Molinaro - 6 - No real mistakes. Few good opportunities either, though.

Camoranesi - 6.5 - Some good break-open plays in the match. Unfortunately nothing converted.

Sissoko - 6 - Generally solid game. A slight deduction for when he went ballwatching when Marchisio had to save our asses.

Marchisio - 6.5 - Needs to improve the precision of his upfield passes. They're close, but this ain't horseshoes. Otherwise had a good tempo and did some great things defensively.

Nedved - 5.5 - Outside of a good play or two, did not offer enough.

Del Piero - 6 - A decent, albeit uneventful, outing.

Iaquinta - 6 - Should have been luckier. Our best player in the first half, he faded as the game wore on and Zenit took more possession.

Subs:

Giovinco - 5 - Pretty much got leveled by the defense whenever he had possession and tried to move the ball upfield.

Marchionni - 6 - Not on much, but did open the game a little when he came on.

Amauri - NR - On so little he probably doesn't even need to wash his jersey tonight.

Coach:

Ranieri - 6 - Played for the draw. Almost didn't get it. Almost won too, but it was a pretty non-committal strategy. Even so, earning points from Zenit at this stage in St. Pete, and not taking on any new injuries (that we know of), probably has to constitute a mild success. And a well-timed card for Momo. ;) I should slam him for his moronic subs, but this was a somewhat pointless match.

I may be wrong, but I think that yellows get wiped after the first knockout round.
No, it was smart, because he will definitely be availabe for the first knockout round.
No they're carried forward if they are singles. If you get more than one they restart.
Wait... This rule needs interpretation.

Article 21
Yellow and red cards
21.01 As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next
match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is
entitled to augment this punishment. For serious offences the punishment
can be extended to all UEFA competition categories.
21.02 In case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for the next competition
match:
a) after two cautions in two different qualifying matches, as well as after the
fourth caution during the qualifying phase;
b) from the first match in the group stage, after three cautions in three
different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered
caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).
21.03 Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season.
21.04 Exceptionally, single cautions from the qualifying phase that have not resulted in a suspension expire on completion of the qualifying phase in question.
21.05 Cautions and pending yellow-card suspensions from club competition
matches expire at the end of the season.

Poulsen and Zanetti should be back for BATE
And they will most probably start. The game against BATE is indeed the game where players will be rested ahead of the Milan clash. We play three matches before we play Milan by the way, just to inform those who are not aware of that.

Qualifying cashes out the cards. Group stages carry them on. Word.

I mostly agree with that but gave Nedved and Sissoko slightly better grades for their tireless defensive performance. Grygera also had 1-2 attacking runs which deserved more.
