I'm pretty sure there's no way for Whoscored to take into account the positioning/marking mistakes a defender does. The rating is based on tackles, interceptions, clearances and passing.

So it clearly favors these physical defenders who play on the front foot rather than the more measured defenders who make sure they are always well positioned.

Yeah its just a stat site. Otamendi won 5 of his Aerial duels and 6 tackles. It would be difficult for them to assess them by other means such as positioning etc.
