never heard about him... and he is 26 years old? It means he is no talentive, just one season lucky. He is portugal?

I think we need to buy defenders who was promisind and had good records from 18 years or younger.... Othervise they are not so good. If juve want to be strongest team in Europe we definetly need best players not just average.

    That said it all you know;
    You've never heard of him....

CL winner and dubbed by many as the best central defender in the CL. People only heard about him for a short time because there is little coverage of the portugese league. How can you call Carvalho average? if Carvalho won the CL wasn't he part of the arguebly best team of europe ?

Juve intercept Carvalho talks Sunday June 20, 2004

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter transfer target Ricardo Carvalho could be moving to Serie A for Juventus instead, while they turn to Matteo Ferrari.

The Porto star has impressed for his country at Euro 2004 and had been in advanced negotiations with the Nerazzurri for a £5m switch.

However, his interest in this move seems to have cooled and it’s reported the reason behind that is Juve’s interception.

Director General Luciano Moggi is said to have met with Porto directors this week and offered a series of players who are well-liked by their new Coach Gigi Del Neri.

The former Chievo boss is a fan of Matteo Brighi, Andrea Gasbarroni and especially striker Giuseppe Sculli. The forward was on loan with the Flying Donkeys this season and proved pivotal in Italy’s Under-21 European Championship triumph.

However, both clubs could be pipped to the post with news that Chelsea and Real Madrid are showing interest in the 26-year-old defender.

With this in mind, Inter are said to be turning their attention towards another reinforcement in defence – Parma’s Matteo Ferrari.

The 24-year-old Italian international is also a target for Roma, but the Nerazzurri and new Coach Roberto Mancini could tempt him to the San Siro.

Other options include Argentine Nicolas Burdisso and Udinese’s Danish international Per Kroldrup.

I really like this guy. He plays very save, and hardly makes a mistake. Also, he is a very good build up player, something we lacked last season. An alternative to Mexes, who is Roma-bound!

Carvalho would be a great alternative to Mexes, but I still don't see why we can't get Matteo Ferrari.

Surely Roma don't have the funds to sign Mexes and Ferrari, so why can't we get one of them? Squillaci, Kroldrup, and many others would make good purchases, but Juve should be aiming for the best.

Hopefully Moggi listens to Capello and signs Cannavaro because although he's quite old, we badly need some class at the back, and Canna can give us that.

I watched every Porto CL game and Carvalho was solid, easily the best defender in the Competition. Rumours regarding Burdisso are very exciting. He was the captain of the U21 Argentina team that won the cup

Fortunately Juve's front office is paid to look over the fence and not just at what's handed to them on a Serie A/La Liga/Premiereship platter.

if Carvalho won the CL wasn't he part of the arguebly best team of europe ?
Another interesting fact about Carvalho's performance in big competitions: of the last 7 major international tournament games he's played in (final rounds of this year's CL plus Euro 2004), 6 of them were clean sheets. Sure there's a lot more players responsible for that, but it's not entirely a coincidence.

And Burdisso? Whooo yeah, I've been a big fan of him for the past year too.

OK i admit that there are not so many news from Portugal league, but still if player is good (like Cristiano Ronaldo or Quaresma) everyone knows about them since thei are adults, everyone knows that they are talendet and big prospects for the future. And what about Carvalho says Euro website? "Ricardo Carvalho has had to battle to earn a regular place in the FC Porto defence" so he is far not the best.. Besides Porto won because of big luck and perfect manager, they were more team than individials. As i know this player he has no pace, he is slow and i dont think that he will make biger impact then Legro. And more, now he cost for Juve a fortune, there are more good and talented defenders for cheaper price.

    Carvalho sounds very intresting
and that Burdisso guy starting to interest me as well
Burdisso is very intresting, he is in the same league as Mexes, fast and skilfull - he is future but he is foreign player, that can be a problem...

A lot of this is hard to follow, so i'll react to what i understand.

About Quaresma and especially Ronaldo: Most people only started to know them when they joined Barcelona and man utd respectively. Ferguson would probably have no idea who Cristiano Ronaldo would be if he didn't play that friendly match against sporting last summer.

About Carvalho, sure he had to fight for a place. Everyone has to. Porto did not win by luck, some brutal tactics maybe, not luck!

According to you Carvalho has no pace, how do you come up with that stuff?? Did you watch Portugal - Spain? Carvalho often caught up with Fernando Torres and Vicente who both are very good sprinters. He is much smarter than Legro, tactically sound; He is just fantastic!

He isn't THAT expensive, Ferrari is probably more expensive.

    -------------------------------------

Forget all the Mexes' and Ferrari's, Carvalho is the one we need and should get. IMO one of the top 5 cb's already and will only improve!

    (not talented... :groan: sure..)

mexes...pure class, but once he done the roma shirt, he beocme a arse, so from what im seeing in the current market, the player im most impressed with is Cavalaho and Andrade, both high class defender with awsome recovery ability...eithe of them will be equal to mexes.

Ronni and quaresma, im sure tom was shouting about them both along time before the made there moves...we have wanted them for ages, but hey moggi is the boss, if he believes Zebina i what is needed then its up to him

He did a great game against Spain tonight...he's very good..I wish we could get him
I agree. He was brilliant at times. His distribution from the back is unusually good, and he tackles really well. The only weakness I've seen in his game is his lack of pace.

Andrade isn't a porto defender anymore for some time now ;).

Andrade would be amazing to have, but much more unlikely and more expensive. + Andrade often tends to make one fatal mistake in a match.

Carvalho is imo even better than Andrade.

I'll agree with you here. If you had to pick one on any given day, Carvalho has been the better defender this year. But yesterday, Adrade was clearly dominant.
