I think what we have here is a case of the West telling the East to lighten up. In US papers we get political cartoons making fun of Bush and his idea that God made him President all the time. Sure a few right wing Christians are offended and cry about in on TV for a couple of days. But usually its just good for a giggle while you finish your coffee in the morning nothing more nothing less. Im sure US papers have even cut on Muhammad from time to time and no one seems to care. At least on a world wide scale. I think this thing is way more political and drawn out than it needs to be. But thats only my opinion non the matter.

I think the antisemitic jokes of arab newspaper´s are against Jewish people but not the religion or Moses. you can consider most of arabic countries in a war with Israel, even if they do not show that. it is not the same thing to making antisemitic jokes and to make jokes about the prophet. For moslems the prophet is very important, and such jokes can not be tolerated. on the other hand arab and moslems should stop violent reaction about anything they don´t like, this is destroying the image of islam, this relligion is for peace, and this what is happening in some islamic cities is just not acceptable.

Actually Denmark is not really dependent on oil from the middleeast. We have oil and gas ourselves, the rest we buy from Norway. And the export we have in the area, totals to about 1% so the economical aspects are blown out of proportion.

The danish govournment will never apologise on behalf of the newspapers, because they cannot censur liberal media. Unconditional freedom of speech is as much the foundation of our culture, as religion is in yours...

They can burn as many flags and embassies they like, sooner or later they will realise how ridiculous this is and be ashamed of themselves.

This is one issue where I can garantie Denmark will not back down! Threatening all scandinavians will not make any difference, other then hurt the turist business.

Fuck no. Apparently you didnt see that I said Bush one said God made him President. We made fun of this idea. We made fun of God. You know Allah. Anyway Muslims are taking things a bit too seriously and seem to be definitely calling the kettle black. I also said that Muhammed gets cut on (made fun of) in the US. As well as Jesus, God, Allah, Zeus and whatever other diety you want to bring up. The point is none of those many times caused such uproar from Islamic communities and countries around the world. Only when a newspaper in Denmark publishes similar pieces does the proverbial shit hit the fan. That was my point.

I'd like to know where you live since if it's in a Western nation you live up to the sad stereotype of the never-adjusting immigrant, and if you live in the Middle East you obviously need to learn about the customs and laws in Europe.

Here's a quote from the Newspaper that released the cartoons.

"None of the cartoons transcends the limits of what we usually say and do in Denmark," said Flemming Rose, culture editor of "Jyllands-Posten," which first published the cartoons. "We make fun of Jesus Christ, we make fun of the royal family, we make fun of politicians, and so on and so forth. And among those 12 cartoons, in fact, one of them is specifically making fun of me and my newspaper, saying we are a bunch of reactionary provocateurs. Another cartoon is making fun of a very famous Danish politician who is critical towards Muslim immigration."

With regards to point 1, two wrongs dont make a right.

Just because taking the piss/making fun out of Jesus has become the norm in Chirstendom, does'nt justify the cartoons.

I agree with you on point 3.
Is this right then?

Here's a gallery of what happened in Beirut yesterday. Unfortunately the danish embassy is located next to one of Beirut's nicest churches, it is gone!! What does this have to do with Denmark's newspaper?

BTW Tom, nice avatar.

It's not because of the drawings themselves...

It's because Denmark has an army in Iraq...

It's because the Danish queen insulted Islam many times...

We must show our opposition to Islam, says Danish queen
By Hannah Cleaver in Berlin
(Filed: 15/04/2005)

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has called on the country "to show our opposition to Islam", regardless of the opprobium such a stance provokes abroad.

Her comments further undermined the image of Denmark as a liberal haven for those seeking a new life in northern Europe.

Queen Margrethe II
The Danish government has already been accused of fuelling xenophobia by introducing measures which effectively closed the country to asylum seekers.

But in overtly political passages from an official biography published yesterday Queen Margrethe makes comments certain to complicate her nation's relationship with Muslims.

She said: "We are being challenged by Islam these years - globally as well as locally. It is a challenge we have to take seriously. We have let this issue float about for too long because we are tolerant and lazy.

"We have to show our opposition to Islam and we have to, at times, run the risk of having unflattering labels placed on us because there are some things for which we should display no tolerance."

"And when we are tolerant, we must know whether it is because of convenience or conviction."

The Queen, who turns 65 tomorrow and has reigned since 1972, wields no political power but does occasionally comment on political issues.

Denmark has seriously limited immigration in the past three years and the anti-immigrant Danish People's Party, an ally of the centre-Right government, has pushed through laws making it harder to bring in foreign spouses or qualify for asylum.

The queen told her biographer, Annelise Bistrup, apparently referring to Muslim fundamentalists: "There is something impressive about people for whom religion imbues their existence, from dusk to dawn, from cradle to grave."

She said she understood how disaffected young Muslims might find refuge in religion. This tendency should be fought by encouraging Muslims to learn Danish so they could integrate better, she said.

"We should not be content with living next to each other. We should rather live together."

Well, this small country wants to stand in front of Islam...

This is really rediculous...

To those who have yet to see them, here are some of the 12 caricatures:
I have them all, will send by email by request.

What amazes me is that, caricatures have been going on for ages and ages concerning all religions and even more critical issues and no one has reacted to any of them in this barbaric manner.

You do understand that the newspaper is from Denmark? And they make fun of a lot of people, ideas, and religion. Have you seen the cartoons? All of them? Even the ones that don't make fun of Islam? And 400 years ago we were in the Dark Ages and the "modern" world was quite uncivilized. And really how much older is Christianity that Islam? You cannot say because Islam is such a young religion that its followers should be allowed to be fanatical and upset all the time. Thats like saying the United States is young, so we can take over who we want.

* Maybe I can find the cartoons and post them for examination.

You should take into consideration that the queen holds no political power in Denmark. What she says is her personal opinion and should be considered as such, though I must agree it is a very silly thing to say at the moment.

This is not an excuse, try not to convince yourself with it.

What does this person want?

Islamic fundamentalist burn US flags. Does that mean US citizens have the right to demand beheadings?
