The defendants had denied any wrongdoing and defense lawyers had sought the acquittal of both, arguing there was no evidence that players were given banned substances.

The lawyers have also contended that other drugs Agricola was accused of administering were commonly used in soccer.

The verdict appeared to be a black mark for one of Italy's top teams. However, lawyers expressed some satisfaction at the ruling.

Juventus were accused of using banned substances (EPO to be exact) and no evidence of EPO was found. The judges ruled in our favor regarding that. The prosecution then accused Juve of over administering legal substances (over the counter creatine). Players were allowed to ingest 4 mg per day. No evidence to suggest any player exceeded 4 mg was found. The problem for Agricola was that he had tons of creatine in his possession. This is the point where the Statute came in to play.

Basically Juve were found not guilty of using illegal drugs. That's what counted. It was never proven that players used more creatine than permitted, and the only qustion mark was why so much creatine was in Agricola's possession (which is not a crime).

After all, if a thief stole a Picasso painting and, years later, it was discovered in his possession, should that painting not be returned to the rightful owner, even if you cannot prosecute the thief for the theft of it?
