NAPLES, Italy (AP)—Longtime Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero testified at the trial into the Italian match-fixing scandal on Tuesday that the Turin club won its Serie A titles deservedly.

“Whichever squad won the title deserved to, Juve like any other,” Del Piero said, according to the ANSA news agency.

Juventus was stripped of the 2004-05 and 2005-06 Serie A titles by a sports court four years ago for influencing referees and the outcome of matches. The 2004-05 title remained unassigned but Inter Milan was awarded the 2005-06 crown.

However, newly released phone taps allegedly show Inter also attempted to pressure referees, and the Italian football federation has opened a new inquiry into the matter.

Del Piero is in his 18th season with Juventus. His goal in a 4-0 win over Lecce on Sunday gave him 178 for his Serie A career, tying him with 1950s standout Giampiero Boniperti for the club record.

The scandal was the biggest corruption case in the history of Italian football. Besides Juventus, three other top clubs—AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina—were penalized, as were Reggina and Arezzo.

The key defendant in the trial is former Juventus executive Luciano Moggi, who is facing charges of criminal association aimed at committing sports fraud.

Another former Juventus executive, Antonio Giraudo, has already received a three-year sentence from the Naples court.

Moggi and Giraudo were banned from football for five years by a sports court for influencing the outcome of matches. They deny wrongdoing.

At the heart of the scandal were allegations that Moggi and Giraudo created a network of contacts with federation officials to influence refereeing assignments and arrange for key players in other teams to be booked ahead of matches with Juventus.

Inter also denies that it influenced referees.
