The Italian Association of Footballers has announced the nominees for the prestigious Calcio Oscars 2008.

The annual awards are voted for by Serie A's players during pre-season and are presented on January 19.

Milan ace Kaka won the coveted Best Footballer of 2007 prize with Francesco Totti taking the Best Italian Footballer honour.

Retired Lazio No 1 Angelo Peruzzi was presented with the goalkeeper award and Luciano Spalletti was voted as best Coach.

This season, the battle for Best Italian Footballer is between Alessandro Del Piero, Daniele De Rossi and Andrea Pirlo.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kaka and Adrian Mutu fight it out for the foreign prize.

Calcio Oscars 2008 nominees:
Best Coach: Carlo Ancelotti, Cesare Prandelli, Luciano Spalletti
Best Referee: Emidio Morganti, Roberto Rosetti, Massimiliano Saccani
Best Goalkeeper: Gigi Buffon, Sebastien Frey, Julio Cesar
Best Youngster: Mario Balotelli, Sebastian Giovinco, Marek Hamsik
Best Defender: Giorgio Chiellini, Philippe Mexes, Alessandro Nesta
Best Italian Footballer: Alessandro Del Piero, Daniele De Rossi, Andrea Pirlo
Best Foreign Footballer: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kaka, Adrian Mutu
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If Del Piero and Chiellini don't win in their respective categories, it will be bullshit!

Ancelotti for best coach further underlines the fact that reaching UEFA Cup with AC Milan is considered an achievement. As a generous football fan, I really hope they can repeat that remarkable success this season as well.

Euro 2008 is not part of Serie A, even if Italy won the tournament thanks to Buffon it won't make a difference in that prize which focuses only on the league.

Kaka is expected to be at the Oscar del Calcio on Monday, where he is nominated as Best Foreign Player.

The £108m Manchester City target should attend the Italian version of the Players’ Association Awards, which are based on votes given by professionals in pre-season.

Kaka is a candidate to win Best Foreign Player for 2007-08, up against Inter’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Fiorentina star Adrian Mutu.

The Best Italian Player is between Alessandro Del Piero of Juventus, Roma hero Daniele De Rossi and Milan’s Andrea Pirlo.

Best Goalkeeper is a toss-up between Gianluigi Buffon, Sebastien Frey and Julio Cesar, while Best Young Player will be one of Mario Balotelli, Sebastian Giovinco and Marek Hamsik.

Giorgio Chiellini, Philippe Mexes and Alessandro Nesta are nominated for Best Defender in 2007-08, while the Best Coach title is between Milan’s Carlo Ancelotti, Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli and Luciano Spalletti of Roma.

And finally, the Best Referee nominations are Emidio Morganti, Roberto Rosetti and Massimiliano Saccani.

The Best Overall Player will be calculated from pitting together the winners of the individual categories.

There are also awards voted for by the general public for Best Goal of 2008, Fan Award for most popular player and Fan of the Year.

This award is day after tommorrow, so lets guess the winners.

Best goalie is 50-50 between Gigi and JC. I am guessing leaning on JC because him being in that high level isnt his typical standard, also winning a title, AND Gigi has like 7 of this award :D I'm guessing JC will win, but it might as well be Gigi too, very close case.

Best defender, no question, its Chiellini. Mexes isnt much of a competition, been good, but not a revelation like Giorgo. Nesta is an all time legend in quality, but WTF is he nominated for???? frigging Molinaro has had a better year :D Even if he isnt strictly all defensive player, I would have nominated Maicon, great great player.

Best foreign player is clear ofcourse, Zlatan. Mutu respectable second, Kaka a laughable third because he has been mediocre, very weak candidate.

Best youngster is between Hamsik and Giovinco, without any doubt clearly should be Hamsik for consistency, already one of the top performing in the league. But Giovinco may be a good candidate too because he shined whenever he has played, and is the hope and darling of Calcio, so they might give it to him on that alone (and I would love it :D). Balotelli the lazy mofo is a primavera player nowadays, and him being nominated wont help Inter because his ego is already galactic (thinks he is too good to train...).

Best coach is bit weird, because somehow they dont want to nominate Mancini, because he would the most likely winner if he was (but then again, its only for 2008 and not whole last season, so its understandable). But either way, of those 3, should be Spalletti because he did the best out of them. Outside chance they might give it to Prandelli, NO WAY for the Uefa cup chubby, the pudgy blob can settle with the free dinner of this event, because he hardly even deserves to be nominated. Which team ended up 6th? Udinese? Little difference between them and Milan, might aswell have nominated Marino.

Best referee. What can we really say about referees, the best oughta the one you remember the least :p But Rossetti it will be, is the most respectable of the bunch, and since he won FIFA's best referee in the world, he will clearly win for Italy too.

    Best player in overall
is someone out of all these players, and it obviously will be Zlatan, and deservedly so, even I would dig it if you know who is picked

The most obvious award of them all, best italian player. De Rossi a very respectable candidate, but WTF is Pirlo nominated for??? Bizzare, I would have chosen Totti who was injured half of the team over this mofo who's been crap. Cassano and Buffon I would have picked over him too, prolly can mention others. But it doesnt matter in the end, because there can be only one winner, Alex :touched: He will obviously also win that most popular player award :star:

Guessing Juve players will win 2-3 awards (3rd if Gigi wins, 2 is guranteed) of the 4 they are nominated for, plus outside chance with popular player and and best player overall. But it would be cool, even if not the most deserved candidate, if Seba won too, so we can dominate this little shinding  Not that we need to, you oughta see the overall count for this calcio awards, we lead it BY A MILE.
