I hope people are not forgetting how good Pjanic is when playing a more advanced role.

His statpadding is hella crazy when given a more offensive role as a CM rather than playing DM.

While I think he did great as a DM cause his defending is pretty good (great defensive work rate btw) and his passing is excellent, which allowed us to distribute the ball, he could be much more effective closer to goal and with lesser defensive responsibilities.

Just look at his numbers when playing CM compared to DM.

CM: 18 apps 5 goals 4 assists
DM: 13 apps 0 goals 2 assists
AMC: 5 apps 0 goals 4 assists

And it's not like we have world class wingers to sacrifice Pjanic's offensive output.

Pjanic was probably our most important player when he played in that deeper role. Don't care about stats, I care about what suits the team the best and imo Pjanic in that deeper role is essential to us unless we sign Verratti.

Well I could see N'Zonzi freeing him up a bit but that's not the point.

Having a playmaker who can run our play from deep is more important than having a CM who can get the occasional assist/goal.

Quite a big portion of Pjanic' assists/goals come from dead ball situations anyways.

He did play well but did we ever dominate the midfield in those games? No, we didn't. And our lack of dominance in midfield really showed against Real Madrid.

So, no. I wouldn't say our midfield was exceptional. All we did was mask (almost) all our midfield problems.

He put in wc level performance vs Barca and generally did well in the 4231.

Real was one game, not the entire season, and pjanic was hurt, khedira wasn't 100%, Mandzukic was banged (zizou did well going extra physical vs our "dm"), our attackers finally ran out of gas in their 1000th game of the season, real had a two week break, and their 4 man mid helped too.

All those things along with real's increased intensity led to that level of physical inferiority in 2nd half which was coupled with choking following the deflected goal.
