Get a grip Dr-Juve. The war had nothing to do with it. It was just a setting (that people can relate to at this time) where the joke about the accent can be applied.

i said not funny at all and didnt ment you by that but i ment the arabs who are trying or pretending that its very funny and ignoring the fact that its a pure insult (which is not a new thing anyway)
I thought it was quite amusing actually (The first time I saw it). Same way Indian-American comedian Russel Peters made fun of the Indian accent (his own, mind you).

"pretending," "ignoring" ... What a load of you know what (I'm fasting). Are you that insecure and weak to see this as an insult? Most Arabs have that kind of accent. It's a fact. No shame in it. Like any other American would have a terrible Arabic accent. It's natural. Does the fact that many Arabs have wierd English accents make them any less human? Should we get offended by it? Moreover, should we even consider it as a weapon in our insult arsenal?

OF COURSE NOT. IMO, the biggest belittlment is to those who think it's an insult and use it to diss forgeiners. [/QUOTE]

though you're right on the whole blowing it out of proportion deal, i could definitely see how the video could bother some people. And the issue is not with the accent but rather with the context ( i.e war, asymmetric struggle...) add to that the different cultural notions of humor and it's very normal to have members who'd take offense.

"asymmetric struggle!" The guy was annoyed because HE ( not his buddies, mind you) had subtitles. You're reading too much into it, and Dr-Juve even more so.

Also, I'm sure "cultural notion of humor" isn't a factor either. Dr-Juve and I pretty much share the same culture. Ask him about how these kinds of jokes are used all the time. Ask him if he's ever heard someone immitate an indian's accent or an egyptian's accent. It's quite common. What's disguting is the mentality that some people have in thinking that this is a huge insult, whether they are on the sending or receiving side.

Assymetric struggle referred to the conflict between US, super power, and iraqi insurgents so a bit sensitive. Any which you spin it the fact remains that in a context of war, whether voluntary or not, deriding the opposition is propaganda. But just i said earlier i agree on not letting it affect you especially since its so mild.

I am not sure I find a "hidden insult" within this video clip as perhaps I was too busy laughing. People make fun of accents all the time and when you try to speak another language that you are not fully accustomed to you will undoubtedly make mistakes. In America we make fun of accents all the time, especially that of the hick Appalachia region around these parts.

And I am not exactly sure how the joke of subtitles actually insults Arabs..

u didnt answer the Q
why iraq? and why now?

dear if u have something common in your culture that doesnt mean its common in the others culture, and u have to know something very important i dont have any prob with u americans (i have alot of them as friends) but what i meant is that, we as an arabs(not the one fascinated by your cultures) became very sensitive to what is happening in iraq and the way your country marketing there thoughts about Democracy and human rights when all of us know that the main target is securing israel and stealing the arabs fuel.
dont expect us to accept it while we r daily watching our brothers and sisters getting killed by american hands for the same reasons i mentioned above, dont expect us to accept your culture because it doesnt suite us as a mouslims

finally if u have a joke about the arabs please keep it for your self otherwise i am ready to trade with u, by the way i a have a video clips for an american soldeir kissing the boot of an iraqi guy pointing his gun to his head and the american guy was talking in a very funny arabic accent asking them for mercy, for me i didnt take it in any way as a joke.

The joke really isn't the accent, you know...

It's the news organization's assuming that the audience was too stupid to understand the speakers without sub-titles.

ie it slams the media, not Arabs.

If I'd have thought it was slamming Arabs, I absolutely would not have posted it.

The Arab is the most sympathetic character, actually.
    Just sayin...

But what does any of this have to do with the joke itself? How exactly is the joke posted insulting Arabs...it's just a parody of how the US Government seemingly scripted the answers and responses of soldiers during an interview session conducted by President Bush. I do not see Arabs being the target of a malitious joke in this case...I have seen much worse that does not even come close to this. In reality the joke is all on Bush and his administration for getting caught scripting answers during an interview..

    Dr Juve Chill Out man!!

If you take everything that comes from western media seriously you wont ever live peacefully.

In short western media has no respect (for lack of better word) for anyone. Day in, day out, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brian, David Letterman...etc make a joke of everybody. Bush, Clinton, Osama, Arnold, most of Arab Kings, prince charles...etc were made fun of. It is just the way western media operate. Whether there was a hidden insult or not why should you care? If there wasnt then you should laugh at it. If there was just ignore it dont get mad, getting pissed would be essentially the purpose of it....so just ignore it!
