Goodbye, Adrian...

Adrian Mutu to wear shirt no 10 at Fiorentina

Adrian Mutu will wear shirt no 10 at his new team, Fiorentina, for which he will play the next five seasons, the official website of the Italian club announced. “I chose to play for Fiorentina since they are a determined team. This team and this city have some major goals in mind. I am here because I wanted so. I hope that what Coach Cesare Prandelli said about me, that I will make fans love me, will become reality, I know they support the team with all their hearts and I want to reward them for that,” Adrian Mutu said. Mutu said he had been made several offers, yet it was his wish to play for Fiorentina. “To wear shirt no 10 is a responsibility, I am content I picked it. I know that some major players wore it, I hope to play better than I did for Juventus last season,” Mutu said.

    Mutu’s friendly fire Sunday 30 July, 2006

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adrian Mutu enjoyed a dream start in a Fiorentina shirt as he fired a brace in the Viola’s 2-0 win over Greek side Aris.

A bumper crowd of around 20,000 flocked to the Stadio Artemio Franchi and gave the Romanian a hero’s welcome.

He repaid their faith with a crisp first half strike and an excellent free kick after the break.

Mutu joined the Gigliati this summer from Juventus for around £5.5m and has been received with enthusiasm by the fans.

By contrast, the want-away Luca Toni received an indifferent reception with no chants or banners from the Curva Fiesole.

Coach Cesare Prandelli was quick to stress the importance of the Viola tifosi in the coming season.

“We really appreciate the support,” the tactician said. “We’ve never needed the fans more than this season because it’s going to be a very tough campaign.

“It’s difficult to get 20,000 fans at the end of July in Italy.”

Elsewhere, there were several other top-flight outfits facing friendly action on Saturday.

Sampdoria took on Parma in an all-Serie A clash, the Blucerchiati running out 3-0 victors with a brace from Gennaro Delvecchio and a strike from Francesco Flachi.

Serie A newcomers Torino waltzed past Serie D Belluno with ex-Arezzo front man Elvis Abbruscato hitting four goals.

Reggina struggled with Serie C2A Pro Vercelli but ran out 3-1 winners.

The Bianche Cassache had held their Serie A opponents to 1-1 at half-time, but strikes from Simone Missirioli and Honduran striker Leon spared the Amaranto’s blushes.

Cagliari and Empoli were unconvincing in their pre-season clashes.

While the Sardinians edged out Foggia 2-1 with two goals in four minutes from Simone Pepe, Gigi Cagni’s Empoli fought out a dour stalemate with Serie C2B side Carrarese with players nearly outnumbering spectators.

Mutu: Juve made a mistake must pay for it

CONSTANTA, Romania (Reuters) - Romania striker Adrian Mutu said on Wednesday he had put his past troubles behind him after a "horrible" period in his life.

"I'm looking forward for the first time in the past two years," the 27-year-old told Reuters on Wednesday as he prepared for Romania's friendly against Cyprus.

Mutu, sacked by Chelsea in October 2004, served a seven-month ban following a positive test for cocaine.

He joined Juventus in January 2005 but was sold to Fiorentina last month, part of an exodus of top players from the Turin club who were demoted to Serie B for their role in Italy's match-rigging scandal.

"Now, my private life is a quiet one," said Mutu, who has recently married for the second time and has scored seven goals in Fiorentina's four pre-season matches so far.

"I would say that you can see a new Mutu.

"I felt good at Juventus, but they made a mistake must pay for it. Fiorentina is a serious club," he added.

Mutu is hopeful of playing a leading role in Romania's Euro 2008 qualifiers and said his problems with coach Victor Piturca were over.

Mutu said he had been temporarily excluded by Piturca for "insubordination" during a three-team tournament in the United States earlier this year.

"I was nervous because of the Juventus problems and because I was waiting for the birth of my daughter," he said.

"He (Piturca) understood me and I understood his position too.

"We both know that to qualify with Romania for the 2008 Euro finals is my generation's last chance to play at a major international competition in the past six years."

Our management made a mistake letting Mutu go, however now we have Bojinov instead who is a great young talent himself. Lets move on and wish Valeri the best.

The only worrying thing about the deal is that we got Bojinov on loan.
