Not really the fan of Puyol that people make him out to be, but he's one of the best. Lucio should definitely be in that list. Carvalho can be the very best on that list when he is on form, which hasn't happened in the past season.

In my opinion Lucio is one of the most overrated defenders in the world...he was tragic against Chelsea and Juventus last season in the Champions League and was disapointing against Milan this season. Last year Kovac had to cover Lucio's ass very frequently and the only reason that defense was held together was because of the Croatian. If you ask Burke he will tell you the same story, however he once thought very much of Lucio before I convinced him he was overrated. I would take Thuram over him any day of the week and I'm by all means not a fan of Lilian...

He was better in his Leverkusen days, I think, but you can't attack like he does and not leave gaps. For entertainment value, he's one of my favourite players though.

I don't get to watch enough world football these days to put together a proper list. Is this just centre halves?

Center halves. And mikhail echoes my Lucio sentiments. He adds value as a defender that's not normally associated with the position (e.g., Terry). But I haven't seen him much in the past year (look, ESPN here in the States, bro :faq2: )...
