Juventus set for £7 million Benjani raid

PORTSMOUTH striker Benjani Mwaruwari has been linked with a shock £7 million move to Juventus.

Benjani has been in sensational form for Portsmouth this season and has already scored eight league goals after a disappointing season last year.

Mwaruwari, also the skipper for the Zimbabwe national soccer team, joined Portsmouth from French club Auxerre in a then club record fee of £4,1 million in 2005.

Reports in Italy suggest Juve will move for their man in the January transfer window, although Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is unlikely to let him leave Fratton Park.

"He makes goals, his work-rate is incredible and he's just a terrific professional," Rednkapp told Sky Sports. "The fans have loved him from day one because he gives everything.

"Defenders never get a minute's rest because he's strong and aggressive, and has good skill. And now he's weighing in with goals as well it's brilliant. He deserves it."

On Wednesday, Mwaruwari was cool on the transfer speculation.

He told New Zimbabwe.com: “I have great respect for the Juventus coach Didier Deschamps. He wanted me to join Monaco when I was still at Auxerre.

“I have not heard anything official, so I can only continue to work hard for Portsmouth. I am still contracted to this club and I want to do my best for them
.”

Portsmouth will be without their African players in January due to the Africa Cup of Nations, making it highly unlikely Redknapp will agree to sell his free-scoring striker. Benjani is not travelling to the Nations Cup because Zimbabwe failed to qualify.

Redknapp will have to make do without Nwanko Kanu, Sulley Muntari, Papa Bouba Diop and John Utaka.

He is a runner and a finisher. He is tall as well, but think that at 7 million sterling its too expensive for a one season wonder

We have 4 great strikers (Trezeguet, Del Piero, Palladino, Iaquinta) we're complete and full upfront, if there's a player we should add, that should be Gio and no one else.

He's a hard worker..strong physically and he's pretty fast..used to play for Auxerre..i remember he was Cisse's sub..but to be honest he cant finish if his life depended on it...he's kinda like Adebayor..when he's high on confidence his finishing can look better than it really is..Iaquinta is better than him IMO.

no way, one season wonder is one way to put it, for me he is a perfect example of the premierships defensive level. he is making a name for himself scoring against second rate back-lines, not good enough for serie a.

in england all the shite can float to the top

No way!!!!!! This guy is just had a couple of decent games in between plenty of terrible ones. The fact that he is high in the scoring chart is because he scored 4 or 5 against Reading in a game where he was going to be on the bench but injurys forced him in the first team.

100% not Juve standard!

could not agree more mate, i must point out taht i am by no means an EPL hater, i watch a lot of premiership matches but i cannot enjoy it teh same as i do with serie a or la liga. the level of defending is simply attrocious, that game where pompy scored 7 was a prime exapmle as at least 5 of teh goals could have been prevented by simply sticking a leg out and tackling the man

while i do agree the level of defending is considerably higher in the Serie A..i have to say,the same cant be said about La Liga where IMO the defending is worse than in the EPL.
