Well Geof, I've been living in Brussels for some time now so it's only natural that I try to follow the local league a bit. Though, as I said, I had already been very impressed by the Belgian team of WC 1990.

I tend to disagree with your assessment about small teams lowering the level. Unlike in the Netherlands, where Ajax and PSV share all the glory, with the occasional Feyenoord win in between, Belgium has produced quite a lot of different league winners in the last years : from Malines to Lierse and Genk, there's been more to it than just the traditional Anderlecht-Bruges tandem. So, even if the usual top clubs have lost their European aura, it seems that the Belgian League has remained competitive or at least has produced some variety.

    Then we disagree I guess.

Lierse won the league once, yes. It was a big surprise, and since that day, they never found their level back.

Malines was a great club, but sold all their players, and today they play in 3th division, because they were banckrupt. They belong to the past.
Genk is a good subtopper, they challenge Rsca and Brugge every year. Standard are too inconsistent, but they can get a good level in some matches, like winning 4-1 in Anderlecht.

The BeNe-league I see would include those kind of clubs: Anderlecht, Brugge, Standard, Genk, Lierse, Ajax, Psv, Feyenoord, Roda,...

It would definitively attract more players (honestly: who wants to play in Belgium today?), higher up the level, and bring more people to the game.
