2000 - Stands against Mendoza's successor Lorenzo Sanz who calls election after Real win second European Cup in three seasons.
Promises to buy Portugal midfielder Luis Figo out of his contract with arch-rivals Barcelona for a then world record fee of $56 million. Says he will pay some $8.5 million for the season tickets of all Real members if he fails to close deal.
Claims shock election victory with 55 percent of votes. Figo signs on a six-year deal.
