I actually used to do that - but once I offered my seat to an old lady (she must have been around 65-70) and she got all pissed: "I'm not that old young man!!! Do I look old to you? Do you want a piece of me? I'll show you how old I am!!"

a lot of the old people round here are pretty scary actually, a lot of them just stare at me, trying to intimidate me from walking past :D
