10 countries straight from africa and 10 straight from europe, what kind of BS is that? Same amount of african countries getting guaranteed ticket as we get in europe...
Africa gets 5 spots. There will be a draw and a play-off, after which only 5 of the 10 group winners in Africa will make it to the WC.

It's like this: Europe 13, Africa 5, Asia 5 or 6 (normally it's 4 or 5, but Qatar are hosts this time), South America 4 or 5, North/Central America 3 or 4, Oceania 0 or 1.

Italy is ranked 4th in the world and needs to play playoffs.

Tell me what in the world makes sense in that? Should atleast give it to top 16 teams with no qualification.
If the top 16 always get to qualify for everything, how’s someone else going to get into the top 16?

And how can Italy be ranked 4th if they can’t finish top of that group? Come on, that group was ridiculously easy.

this is the same argument that agnelli and the superleague founders were ridiculed for. we can discuss the current format of playoffs, we can discuss the number of teams for each continent (i think europe should have more slots, i'd also give one more to south america, and honestly i don't care about the rest, sorry), but automatic qualification for as much as 16 teams? nah. maybe the continental champs and the title holder could get some places, and i realize that even this suggestion would be highly debatable.

italy fucked it up. jorginho should have scored at least one of those penalties and we wouldn't have anything to discuss. simple as that.

But but but, the almighty Switzerland was a 'direct rival' !!!
Well, they did knock France out of Euros too. Probably an underrated side. Always very solid. Jorginho missing back to back match winner penalties is a pretty big joke as well. But this Italy side is a bit overrated and also massively underperformed the past few months post-Euros. A few players in career best form (Jorginho, Chiesa, Spinazzola, Bonucci, etc) led them to that Euro win, and now we’re seeing what happens when that group comes back down to earth.

italy played without proper Midfielder after verratti got injured
with analyzed last two italy matches, Jorginho should not in starting line up, he was terrible, don't know nothing to do, did not make key passes

Switzerland are a decent side. No Muricans should be talking about easy qualification Bro.

You guys play El Salvador, Honduras, and Jamaica to qualify for the World Cup. That's about as guaranteed as it gets.

Your only decent competition is a bunch of cartel boys, maple syrup and Costa Rica (sometimes).

Current Euro and World Cup winners would be automatically in the next big tournament if it was up to me. Like the CL winner iirc.
Continental champs + hosts should always qualify. What's the point of winning an entire tournament if you still have to qualify - seems ridiculous and asinine, but we all know FIFA and UEFA only care about money, just like the filthy billionaires of our time and pharmaceutical companies.

I agree that the continental champions should qualify automatically. However, it is no excuse for Italy, they had many opportunities to clinch this group sooner. I just hope the playoff goes our way.

There’s one group in africa that has Sudan, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau with Marocco or something. Marocco is like 19-1 stats after 6 games and they could face Mali or Kongo to qualify for World cup.

Then we could see world cup with no Italy or Portugal in it. And as someone said, defending champion should always be there to defend what they won 4 years prior, because it’s logical as fuck.

People saying Italy should have won this or that, well maybe but there’s no african groups where’s one good team and rest are called Madagascar n shit, which are more known for their endangered bats than their football ability.

A total farce.

Why are you picking on Africa Bro? That's racist.

In all seriousness though, it's a World Cup, so we need representation from all over the globe.

However, Africa is comfortably the 3rd best continent behind Europe and South America when it comes to quality of football and talent level. I'd much rather watch Egypt play Algeria (ok, maybe not that particular matchup), Cameroon take on Nigeria or Ghana playing the Ivory Coast than The Goat Fuckers vs Korea or Jamaica vs Honduras.

Why would anyone have a guaranteed spot if they suck? I mean, sure, they won it but 4 years ago. If change of generation happened, chances are big they can start sucking. I see no reason for them to have a spot because they didn't earn it to defend it. If they can't beat peasants that says a lot about their quality.
