This is what you get when you have a provincial manager managing the national side. What's worse is that Ventura is a old stubborn provincial manager failing to comprehend that the 424 formation is prehistoric and belongs in lega pro

Ventura is trash

This formation is terrible, not because it's a bad formation but simply because Italy don't have the players to play it. Nothing about it plays to any players strengths. Insigne is out of position, Belotti and Immobile are too similar, Verratti and De Rossi (at this age) struggle in a midfield 2. Just fucking terrible.

id sooner see crapello in charge to be honest. There is a reason why Conte dropped the 4-2-4 in Serie A, there's a reason why nobody even plays that stupid formation, not even zeman and he's the most suicidal tactician in the country, there are so few players in the world that would even fit into this formation especially in midfield you'd literally need Kante and Vidal who can cover a shit load of ground in mid and give protection to the defence, whilst they offer some potency going forward too.

tavecchio needs shooting for appointing such a retarded manager, once again proving how incompetent he is as head of the figc who can't do a single thing right other than hiring Conte, but we all knew it wasn't ever going to be for the long haul

Such wasted potential in every tournament. I wish Conte stayed, he's absolutely perfect for the national team role. He was such a breathe of fresh air after Prandelli. I'm very, very worried about that playoff now. I really hope Ventura wises up.

He's just another stubborn old dinosaur. He'll continue with this 4-2-4 in spite of everyone, even if it doesn't bring tjem results. If Italy manage to qualify for Russia, I don't expect them to go very far again. A shame too, because with the right coach using the right players in their best roles, this Italy could surprise teams.

In a group with Spain, the playoffs were pretty much a certainty from the beginning.

Now luck will also play some part. It's important for the Italians France and Croatia to win their groups, because those two can still finish second. Portugal seem likely to finish second, but Italy might want them to somehow win the group.
As things stand right now, only Portugal are a very serious opponents in the playoffs. Sweden will be a problem, but the others won't eliminate Italy in 2 legs (Iceland, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Montenegro, Slovakia). But things can change to worse if Croatia/Turkey finish 2nd in Iceland's group, if Denmark/Poland finish second in Montengro's group, or if France finish second in Sweden's group. It's still most likely that Italy will get a weaker team in the playoffs and qualify for the WC.
