But he did so with Italians. I think he will fail in England. You can't turn Cahill into Barzagli. Italian players are so schooled tactically and so convinced it might give them the edge that they can execute a plan perfectly. In a way, I think it was a victory of the entire Italian system not just Conte.
I agree. It shows that no matter how weak crop of players is, they're still tactically and technically great.

But I also gotta say that the teams played poorly at this Euroes.
Maybe so, but no team in the world would find it easy to beat such a cohesive unit. All in all I think Italy sort of did what I expected them to. They usually overperform when no one believes in them, but this time I thought they really were too weak to go beyond the quarter finals. I think if they had it would have been astonishing. Now they've had a good tournament and mainly demonstrated that when it comes to tactics they're the best.

Best part of this euro's is that it was hands down proven that a great team will still beat a vastly superior selection of individuals

I was really afraid football has declined so much that even this wasent the case anymore

Yes and no. They were still a lot better than Germany and did get beat because the Germans had more talent. As always, you need both. And when Italy do have both, they can be an absolute joy.

I disagree. I thought they would have bigger problems against Germany, but they pretty much played an even game. Maybe fatigue could have given them problems, but no one looked weak in the games that mattered.

I think Germany was very overrated going into the tournament. It's why I still believe France can beat them. Italy played the game I expected them to and played it well. Which, tbh, is very impressive in itself.

Germany didn't look as strong as usual, before the the Euros. But I still think they looked very strong this tournament.
Hmm.. They actually did better than I thought they would. But so far Italy was the only team that made a real effort. Slovakia for instance was just bending over the way Klin would when we'd face Barcelona. I guess they have looked better than France so at this stage that pretty much means Germany are the favourites.

France in fact, has greatly disappointed me so far. No cohesion.

Some bursts of nice combinations or individual skill, but there is no demolishing togheterness and gameplan.

Germany will punish that.

Btw all four players playing in the EPL yesterday missed their penalties.

But even without this useless and arbitrary stat, this tournament actually does a lot to indicate the pathetic nature of the Premier League when you think about it, mostly with the failures of England and Belgium.

Sad way to go out, worst penalty shootout I've ever seen. I hate that Buffon will retire without a Euro title, it hurts. We better be able to give him a CL at least. Two years left.

It was a good effort, you couldn't ask any more of them.

As for Darmian, he's looked timid and weak all tournament.
He should come here, we'll fix him.

Don't know if anyone posted this here already but what a touching letter ...

An open letter to Antonio Conte:

As you awaken this morning, I can hardly imagine what you are feeling. I could not imagine you have awoken with a smile on your face, as anything less than total victory suffices in your eyes. But, perhaps you’ve achieved something far greater and far more meaningful in the grande scheme of things. You turned arguably the most pessimistic group of people in the world, the Italians, into a unified and believing fan base in such a manner that we may never again see.

I, myself, was a member of the doubters, at one point I had even said that you should resign. In retrospect, the underwhelming performances against teams like Malta, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria or England. Maybe it was the squad selection that left everybody from the peninsula scratching their heads. But in the end, after two years of work, the final product was there. You chose and crafted 23 men who would run through a brick wall or storm the gates of hell without question – and probably do it with a smile.

You personify grinta. I don’t believe there is a way you can translate that word into another language other than by showing somebody a 30 second video of you on the touchline. I could hardly imagine what it was like in training. You have your ways, and with three Scudetti, a Coppa Italia, and a heroic European Championship to show for it, very few now will be able to question it with merit.

Throughout this tournament, your men used key words in the interviews such as “unity, spirit, passion, brothers, faith,” the list goes on. We haven’t seen an Italy side this bonded together in a very long time. We witnessed the transformation of several players into gladiators. More so, astounding, is the fact that you did all of this in only a few weeks.

In the end, we conceded two goals in five matches and beat the champions of Europe and took the champions of the world deep into penalties. There’s no question, you turned water into fine wine and won the hearts of every Azzurri fan from across the globe. You did it all your way, through all the doubt, disgust and utter confusion of the media and fans alike. The best compliment I could give you is, you proved everybody wrong.

The future for the Nazionale is at a bit of a crossroads. Many new players are needed to bring back the quality needed to beat the best, and a new era is incoming for the Azzurri. The one thing I hope that is not lost or forgotten from this arduous march that you led for two years is the sacrifice and unity you bred into this side. Perhaps in two years time, with the same attitude and new players, we can say in the end, ‘you were victorious’.

People talk like this is some major overachievement. Its a QF exit, same stage Poland, Belgium and Iceland went out in, and one stage earlier than Portugal/Wales. Anything under a semifinal should be considered a failure for a nation like Italy
