Italy’s new head coach, Antonio Conte, looked back at his first cap: “It was something incredible. Sacchi already played with a 4-4-2 line-up, while at Juventus we still played with a sweeper. I was very happy to be there, but also very nervous: It was like having a headache, I felt like a student at school who hadn’t studied enough. The team was extremely organised, especially in defence. I always tried to give my best and avoid making mistakes, Italy was something to fight for and deserve, and this is the attitude I now want from my players.” Which players will be part of Antonio Conte’s squad? “I don’t think there will be many surprises. The team will be similar to Cesare Prandelli’s, with a few changes according to my idea of football. A few Serie A minutes will not be enough to be called up. The national team should be an award for every player, something to fight for, something you badly want to achieve, something that makes you suffer if you don’t get it.” Young players will surely be important: “Sacchi and Viscidi have done a great job, now Sandreani will carry on in the same direction. I have a few ideas: How to defend, how two strikers should stay close to each other, how to play on the wings to switch from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-4 formation. The Under-20 and Under-21 sides should provide players for the senior team, but it will not be easy for anybody. A cap is very important and players have to understand its value. I would like to play with two dangerous wingers, and field a 4-4-2 formation when we defend. I want Italy to become something like a club, every player should know exactly what he has to do and what I expect from him.” Antonio Conte has set himself and his players three goals: “Firstly, I want to pass on my idea of football in tactical training sessions and implement video analysis. Second of all, in terms of training and personality, Italy should become something like a club. I prefer to lose on a counter attack, rather than wait and control the match in midfield. Thirdly, players have to show their love and pride for the national team. Italy, with their four World Cup titles, are the most important national team in the world after Brazil.”
3-3-4?!
Jesus, i was talking about his formation few days ago, to start the game with it and to use very high pressing with the aim to score fast goal in the first 15-20 minutes, than sit back
Conte was talking about an "attacking 3-3-4" even in the first months of 2012 here, when he started using that system. Then we've all seen what what he ended up with. And the Nazionale has by no means better players than us for that system, even cause it's difficult; Asa and Licht may not have the nicest feet, but are two untireable horses that can go up and down the flank with ease for 90 mins. The likes of Abate, De Sciglio, Darmian, are good but not like that. I've also sen attacking line-ups, with wide some slowmos like Candreva lol or the attacking-minded El Shaarawy. That would be the perfect way to concede 4 even against the Northern Irelands of this world. Unfortunately he won't do it, but he will still flop.
