Prandelli is taking some responsibility from Pirlo by playing De Rossi and Verratti beside him. They are taking the ball in deep areas more than Pirlo right now. I think that suits Italy and Pirlo better.
Candreva and Marchisio are really eager to make runs as well. I don't know how well this will hold up against quality competition but it seems Prandelli is really favouring possession perhaps because of the hot climate in Brazil. Rather have the ball than chase it. There's no reason for Italy to not have a possession advantage in all 3 group games.
I think this tactic might work better against stronger teams with Cerci in Marchisio's spot and Marchisio back in midfield for Pirlo.
