 now suddenly everybody is praising 3-5-2 again  remember guys, it's definitely working vs tiki taka false 9, but once it pitted against 4-2-3-1 or it's variant, the 3-5-2 will be too exposed on flanks, just like juve experienced.
Juve have the luxury of being able to buy players in order to be able to field different strong teams in order to adapt to the situation.

National sides don't have the option and have to work with what they have.

Anyway, just because it is being suggested ~3-5-2 is the best option for Italy doesn't mean that they have to play it in every single game.

Montolivo played well for AC Milan during the Serie A season.

But all of his performances for the NT have been awful.

Keep him on the bench.

Possession 53% Spain - 47% Italy. Can't remember last time when was someone holding that much possession against Spaniards.
21(6)-15(3) shots
I remember the first half of the Euro 2012 final, Italy actually out-possessed Spain. All changed in the second half though - mainly due to Italy playing with 10 man due to Thiago Motta's injury.

2 things i learnt from this comp

1. Giacherini is a top player
2. We need a replacement for Barzagli soon
When you say we, do you mean Juve or Italia? Because as far as I'm concern Juventus has Caceres, and really should use Caceres more to provide respite for Chiello and Barzagli, keep their (recently) injury prone bodies fresh. As for Italy, if Barzagli starts to drop, we need a contingency, I don't see the likes of Astori or Rannocchia offering half what Barzagli does. Hopefully something comes of Masi and the Marrone experiment in defence.

Where it up to me, also depending on form and next season's respective club performances, I'd ideally like to see Prandelli take this squad to Brasil.

GK: Buffon, Marchetti, Sirgiu.
DEF: Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Astori, Maggio, Abate, Criscito/De Sciglio (Bocchetti or even Ogbonna could be a possibility also, they'd both make good reserves for Chiello too on the left side).
MID: De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio, Verrati, Giaccherini. Plus three of the following five - Marrone, Florenzi, Nocerino, Aquilani and Insigne.
ATT: Balotelli, Quagliarella, SES; and two of the following four - Immobile, Borini, Giovinco, maybe Rossi depending on his recovery.

Although I know is it sadly a dead certainty that Montolivo will weasel his way into the World Cup squad..

Prandelli's good coach and he proved it again this tournament. Sure, you can look for lice in his coat, but at moment I don't see anyone doing better with the talent pool Italy has. If he reaches semi-finals/finals in WC, I'd like him to continue working with the Azzurri.

Decent effort in the end, Spain were there for the taking but missed chances and no real threat up front was the problem.

Spain's quality off the bench was very telling and changed the game for them in ET.

Obviously the conditions are not ideal in that part of Brazil and that'll be worth bearing in mind for team who play in the north east of the country next summer, it went down to walking pace for most of the last 40-50 minutes of the 120.

Shame for Bonucci, but his technique means he was always going to hit the ball high, it was just a question of how high. I'm quite surprised Italy got that far in the shootout, but all the other pens were very good. Buffon isn't the greatest penalty saver of all time, which has probably been the difference against the Spaniards overall.

Amen, the sooner these retarded fucks are dumped the better.

the contest was over as soon as Aquacunt and Montobitch came on the field.
That's the difference, Jesus Navas, Juan Mata and Javi Martinez contrasting Aquapussy, Olivemountain and Mighty Mouse. I hope Prandelli doesn't hold onto this 'old guard' of back ups for too long.
