Barza was terrible; him and Bonnucci were getting torn to pieces/shreds out there. I can't blame them though. Fatigue was a major factor tonight, and Prandelli got it all wrong from the get-go. There was no point in starting with an adventurous formation and attempting to impose your game plan on Spain. Italy should've stuck to the 3-5-2 which served them so well in the opening fixture. Prandelli went with heart over mind, rewarding the players who he felt should be there, but didn't necessarily deserve to start. I wouldn't have started with Chiellini (2 matches in 3 days after being rushed back from a thigh strain! Are you fucking kidding me), or Abate. 3-5-2, with Maggio and Balzaretti was the way to go, particularly as Maggio was fresh and rested, having being suspended for the semi.

It definitely wasn't Italy's night, from the injury to Chiellini, to two very soft goals conceded, to the rushed subs, to Motta only lasting 5 minutes and leaving Italy down to 10 men for the best part of half an hour. Spain were definitely superior, but 4-0 is too flattering.

Barzagli also pulled up at about 80 mins, he did well to even finish the game. Then some ladyboy scored on his side, which was probably nice for him.

i anyhow don't see the bright future for the azzurri like everyone else now.
the most important players like pirlo de rossi and buffon will be on the wrong side of the 30. while i don't see anyone who could take their jobs especially buffon and pirlos. also in the defence other than chiellini criscito abate and bonucci and maybe ogbonna they could have some real troubles. they could be set in attack with balotelli borini destro maybe rossi and cassano and have a solid midfield with marchisio derossi monti mabye insigne etc.... they def. need to find a leading cb a fullback maybe a goalkeeper and a regista and someone who really can score goals.

Unless they win any age-group tournaments, I think it's safe to believe that other countries are producing better talents. The Azzurini haven't won for a long time as opposed to Spain or Germany, so I think once Pirlo and Buffon retires, the gap would likely be even bigger without some change.

Well yes because they have them, we don't. I said before it sucks that all our skillful players want to be SS's or occasional deep playmakers. We need attacking mids; players who will use their skill in the middle of the park, not just shooting for goal. And it's only a question of mentality/training.

In the past, ADP,Baggio, Zola, Signori etc could all have played together if they weren't just chasing goals. Now Giovinco is falling into the same 'lazy' trap. At the confed cup, we should just play a development team -

I don't know how you really pin it down. At youth levels I've seen solid teams win tournaments, those with several good players but no standouts. I've see teams win tournaments with a clear standout player. Obviously Spain have a system that they have worked on for years. In the 1999 Spain side who won the World U20 tournament Xavi was a clear standout. There were a lot of pretty good players in that team (Orbaiz, Yeste, Marchena, Gabri), and a certain 17 year old Iker Casillas as a sub. Pirlo was the standout in the successful Italy U21 sides of around the same period.

Now look at the Italy v Germany squads from UEFA U21 semi final in 2009, a game which Italy lost despite being the better side:

Look at the difference between what has happened to those German players and their Italian equivalents.

Have a look at the Italy team who won the 2004 UEFA U21 tournament, only De Rossi and Barzagli have been successful at full international level.

Talent at youth levels is one thing, but integrating young players is far more important. Italy doesn't do it well enough, it's been said so many times. The game calls for a more tactical side, so most coaches are scared to risk.

I see players in the Italy youth setup who can stand amongst the top bracket at their age level, but what becomes of them in their careers is another matter.

Probably but Balotelli will play at a high level during the season. What's more important is that the coach forces a possession-midfield based game (unlike what Ferrara and co are doing at U21). Bring Marchisio as an example in work-ethic and get these midget forwards to contribute in build-up play and not just wait for service.
