I have never witnessed a more unfortunate Final than that.. Chiellini getting injured, and then down to 10 because Motta didnt warm up enough!
I feel bad for our players, especially Buffon and Pirlo..They deserved to get that Euro!
I hope Pirlo still has it one final time in 2014..

Forza Azzurri!

Why did anyone expect Italy to win? Criscito out for stupid reasons before the tourney, Chiellini unfit, De Rossi nearly so and Thiago Motta out a few minutes after being subbed. The Italian squad was completely decimated and left without any effective defensive options and with a completely inadequate squad. The fact of the matter is that you cannot defeat Spain without a complete squad. The Spanish 4-6-0, despite its obvious strength at midfield, is fragile against properly solid teams. Yet any incomplete teams will be annihilated, especially when it matters (Finals). It was just a gifted game for Spain, in which they at least put the effort towards achieving such a result, in order to entertain.

Yet I am more than satisfied that Italy reached the Final. They had been the underdogs since the England match, yet when they had the chance they fought hard. The utmost credit to them that they gone this far. Hell, if Spain even lost 1-0, it would have been a greater humiliation to Spain than Italy suffering a 4-0 defeat as they did now.

But in the end, I hope that Conte was paying the utmost attention to this match, if not the whole tourney. I suspect that Juventus will meet similar circumstances and obstacles.

Grazie Azzuri for beating the odds and demolishing everyone's expectations. Spain may have won but Italy showed the most strength and passion to ignore the pundits and the ongoing scandal at home to pursue the title. They beat teams everyone didn't think they could beat and did so with great effort. Grazie Italia. Forza Azzurri.

Grazie Azzurri!

For this wonderfull tournament, suprised everyone and played some very nice football despite all the fatique and injury problems.
Playing and getting results way over the predicted, made it to the final, unfortunatlly Spain are better, but we can only be proud of our team going there and playing good and not defensive football.
and when you do it vs Spain, with 10 men,and with limited attack options then you lose, but still proud of everything you did guys!!

Forza Azzurri!!!

The defeat was fully deserved and the scoreline is a reflection of what happened on the pitch. Prandelli is responsible for this performance because of his bad tactics.
1) Registas are play makers but arent meant to be the only play makers in midfield. They should provide another hub of creativity rather than be the only hub. Italy did have another playmaker, namely montolivo/cuntface but he was as useless as ever. He doesnt even offer work rate like diamanti. The gap between the strikers and the defense was huge especially that spain fielded the entire team in midfield. This left the CBs and Pirlo playing Long balls only that were predictable and hopeful of balotelli magic.

2) The Balotelli Cassano combo doesnt work and it has been clear throughout the entire tournament that they cannot combine. I could understand why the dou were given another shot together as they did combine once against England in the first goal and because you can never really know if Cassano will be on form or not. Apart from that goal they never built any single attack together.

3) The 3-5-2 was a must against spain's immensely talented midfield especially that they played fabregas as a false nine. However if Prandelli was to stick to the 4-3-1-2 he should have atleast played a high work rate player like Diamanti instead of Aquilani's sister or a creative midfielder like the midget. Also, it is clear that Marchisio and DDR were given purely defensive roles they never tried to string 2 passes together all game.

I think the victory over Germany is what made Italy so poor tonight. If montolivo had sucked like he always has I believe Diamanti would have been favored. If Cassano has sucked like he did all tournament then Giovinco might have been favored. The exceptions that the Germany match provided are what made Italy count on the same tactics that killed them tonight. Injuries are not an excuse (they didnt help).

The good things I see coming out of this tournament for Italy is a) Serie A will command more respect and Juve might make a few extra fans. b) Balotelli has finally found his home in the azzuri.. a place where he really gives 100% for the team. c) Pirlo's rebirth isnt for just one season. d) Bonnuci, Chiellini, Barzagli, Marchisio, balotelli, maggio will probably benefit from that international experience at this level and we can now expect them to be the backbone of the next Azzuri. This is good for Juve(in the CL particularly) and the Azzuri. e) The world were reminded how good buffon is even at this age. d) I am delighted that Milan have Abate, Heart ached Cassano and Montolivo. Our next Scudetto should be relatively easy. (Ibrahimovic will decide how easy the race will be).

I had to get this out of my system. Good night

Bullshit. Parandelli simply utilised the resources he had at hand the way there were meant and had to be utilised.

Hell No. Playing Abate over Maggio was a huge mistake. Playing 3 midfielders (and 1 useless player) against spain's 6 midfielders was a mistake. 3-5-2 was the way to go and Prandelli had enough players to field a stronger team in the 3-5-2.
Kudos to Prandelli for getting the team this far against all odds thats for sure. But in this game he pulled a fergie against barcelona kind of tactics.

Are you serious? Based on what? Obviously not Maggio's performances this tournament.

Honestly I did expect Prandelli to revert back to 3-5-2 again, especially since Fabregas was always gonna get chosen instead of Torres. Italy would have at least contained the Spanish midfield with 3-5-2 and probably would not concede that second goal, which really killed any chance Italy had..
But then again,we never know what was gonna happen,Xavi was all over Pirlo tonight and none of the midfielders who usually go into tackles and winning balls showed up tonight for Azzurri, and again Montolivo played like his usual crappy self..

Forza Azzurri! I still hope Prandelli stays, its always good to have a Juventino at the helm of Italy!

Well since all Italy's full backs cant defend at all, maggio atleast offers an attacking option unlike Abate who sucks and sucked going forward or sitting back. 4-3-1-2 doesnt only demand a playmaker, it also needs the flanks. Today Spain almost played 2-8-0 with Alba and Arbeloa joining in the midfield at all times. No wonder Marchisio and De Rossi ran out of energy in a matter of minutes. I was dreaming during the game of a Conte move (change to 3-5-2 in midgame)

Abate actually didn't play that bad - certainly had a more solid performance than the rest of our defense. Merely playing another useless player wouldn't have improved things with apparently enough players. 3-5-2 is only a good formation if a team has enough quality players at midfield to keep up with the opposing midfield. Italy doesn't. And the thing with a 4-6-0 is that it exposes both the midfield AND the opposing half. Even if Italy reinforced the midfield, then the Spanish would have simply exploited the defense (which was already in a bad state with 4 at the back)

I agree that Abate is a very limited player but Maggio has been awful as RB in all his games recently. I would have played Balza at RB or 3-5-2 with Maggio.

No words to describe the tears of Bonu , Pirlo and Balo
This was a heavy defeat, real champions grow from losing big games....this Azzurri team will keep growing, we have the core to be great, we just need to stick by these guys, stay patient and enjoy the ride . GRAZIE AZZURRI you made us proud, played beautiful football and never surrendered!

One thing.., after the Chellini injury we should have gone back to 3-5-2 and flood the midfield.
