Andrea Pirlo believes Italy are developing a style of football that approaches world champions Spain.

“It was an important game, we had fun, kept the ball and didn’t need to get too tired. It was a nice way to end the season with this victory that takes us closer to qualification,” he said of the 3-0 win over Estonia.

“We took the right approach to this match and in the end got a positive result.”

Cesare Prandelli adopted the 4-3-1-2 system with no recognised centre-forward until Giampaolo Pazzini came off the bench.

“There are many quality midfielders who can start the moves, so we can rotate our positions. It’s a new way of playing for us and we really enjoy our football.

“The Coach has a lot to choose from and we are ready for anything. He has already given us a very positive mentality during this year together. We really want to play football and entertain the fans.

“Prandelli did very well to calm the group and turn over a new leaf after that World Cup. We are on this new path and will try to continue it all the way.”

This system has been compared to that of world and European champions Spain.

“We are adopting a similar style to Spain, but it takes time to develop that and we hope to be a little closer to them by the time Euro 2012 comes round.”

Pirlo also commented on Serie A matters, such as his move to Juventus and the betting scandal that has shaken football this week.

“Milan and I made a decision together. I wanted a new experience after 10 years, Juventus gave me this opportunity and now I hope to do well with that shirt.

“People come to the stadium to have fun and see good, clean football. We hope these allegations aren’t true, but in any case we showed the good side of Italian football and sent an important signal.”

Anybody can play like Spain when your opponent is ESTONIA, douche.
Something tells me you mocked regardless of what was said? What about this quoted bit is hard to get or ludicrous? “We are adopting a similar style to Spain, but it takes time to develop that and we hope to be a little closer to them by the time Euro 2012 comes round.”

Its an observation of the kind of midfield they are aspiring to, and with how its set up, its bit similarly centralized and passing focused, and can see why he said that, nothing of what he said is about having similar quality as Spain at all or basing it on facing Estonia or not, but the midfield style he hopes the team approaches, and even saying it will take alot of time and such.

Actually Italy have reminded me more and more of a Spanish team under Prandelli, I thought that all through the game and in previous encounters. Pirlo did say style after all, we aren't talking about direct quality. Reading quotes properly is obviously very difficult.

Did you hear that Rossi is now better than Aguero? That was the comment after he scored against Estonia.
Of course, that's fanboyism talking.

That's the thing, even the US can "play like" Spain against Estonia. It's friggin' Estonia. So EHHH, wrong about that one, Oz.

Overwhelming the central park of the midfiled with numbers, and alot of short passing/off the ball movement is what Prandelli is going for, has been developing more and more for each game (less of the scared of possession and lets make long balls to strikers approach of before). And yeah its a style similar to Spains, just an obvious observation to make.

Read again, NOTHING of it has to do with facing Estonia, but the approach the coach and the team are going for. The direction they are heading/working on style wise (and he even says it takes time, and hopefully they will work on it for next years euro). Why is that hard to get? Why are you getting hung up on facing Estonia? Has nothing to do with it.

And you have to be able to have players who can pass the ball well and move well to do it, not every team has players of this type. Funnily enough Marchisio was the most static of the midfield, he mopped up, and Pirlo ran the show with Montolivo linking with Cassano, Aquilani and Rossi.

Yep, Marchisio was bit in and out of the game too much, Nocerino did meh with bad touches and such, but he was more involved then Marchisio. Pirlo and Montolivo excelled in the set up of this midfield though. And linking up with Cassano and Rossi was so easy for them. They just need someone more involved then Aquilani infront of them. Or just simply play Montolivo as AM (I mean permanently if going for 4 CMs, he did well there taking over from Aquilani), and have DDR and Motta next to Pirlo.

What about playing Cassano as a trequartista? I think he has the qualities to do so.

Buffon
Cassani/Maggio-Bonucci-Chiellini-Balzaretti
Marchisio-Pirlo-Montolivo
Cassano
Pazzini-Rossi

or, just use today's formation and use Giovinco as the trequartista instead of Aquilani.

Yes it does. They may be striving to play like Spain, but almost anybody could put in a possession display similar to Spain against Estonia... without even trying to do so. I know what the Azzurri are trying to do, but lets see them do it against a better side, like France for instance. Would they come out to say they are trying to adopt a style similar to Spain if they had drawn this match? Probably not. So it's just another wankfest.

That midfield would be crushed any good team.

Exactly. It has nothing to do with Estonia.

Wasnt Andy the one laughing of the argument that La Liga is a shitty league because there are teams like Almeria there? When some people downplayed Messi because he played in La Liga Andy was the first one to jump on it. What's the difference here?
