I was born and raised here in the US, living in Michigan for a couple years then moving to Maryland and Pennsylvania for the rest. Nowadays Detroit and it's suburbs are rather cheap to live in compared with other big metropolitan areas, like the Washington DC area. Maryland is etremely expensive nowadays, and if you look at the suburbs all the prices are very much inflated.

Getting the visa is indeed a pain and even more if you come from countries connected with terrorism

When I got my student one they didnt ask any stupid questions but I had to wait like 2 damn hours (thank God the embassy had some TVs that showed Euro 2004!)
2 hours huh....be thankfull...

2 hours is a bit better than 4 months.

Yeah......haven't you heard about the "axes of evil"

Yeah, those fuckers.

The Belt Axe, the Camping Axe, and the omnipresent Polished Steel Hand Axe.

Evil, Evil Axes. More UN Sactions against those Axes of Evil. Better keep an eye out for those Hatchets while we're at it.

:D Too good to pass up. You understand.

Maybe im just being ignorant, but what terroist activity in indonesia?
Indonesia has traditionally been an easy place for terrorists to hide because of the geographical situation. It's very easy to remain unseen in such a complicated archipelago. Especially since Indonesia's inner waters fall under an exceptional law that allows free passage by foreign vessels. It's a mess.

Holland suffered several brutal terrorist attacks in the 1960s and 70s (hijackings of trains and primary schools) when Indonesia had just regained independence from the Dutch Empire. As I said, long history.

Man, where do I begin ???

You cant just come and "live here"

You need to go thru a whole process to do that, which could take years...

If you are coming here as a student, it may be a shorter process, but seeing as though you are from Indonesia, a hub for terrorist activity, it could be a long time....
:yuck:
of course we can't just come and live there.
and I'm sure you can't just come and live in Indonesia too.
I have lots of friends studying in America and I'm glad they don't meet lots of people like you who generalize country from newspaper.

Considering Dutch Empire drained lots of Indonesian resource during their 300+ years of colony in Indonesia,I think it's quite normal that they pour their hatred after independence. When a country is in state of chaos, everything could happen.
The simple history is like this, Dutch is driven out by Japan on 1942, and then Indonesia proclaim independence on 1945.
On 1948, Dutch still consider Indonesia as one of their colonies and made an attack, however, they're driven away. so it's not on 1960-1970 period.

Oh I'm not saying it can't be justified. I'm about as anti-colonisation as it gets. I signed a petition the other day trying to get the government to release our remaining colonies in the caribbean.

But that's not the point. I was just explaining how terrorism has a history in Indonesia.

The hijacking and terrorist attacks in Holland in the 1960-1970 period I referred to were committed by Moluk terrorists. Something about the Moluk region trying to seek independence from Indonesia. I think their fight was pretty hopeless so they were trying to get the former colonial power (Holland) involved in the mess. They didn't get the attention they wanted so they hijacked trains and schools.

EDIT: reading that post back; I made a mess of things. It reads like the independence war of Indonesia and the terrorist attacks in Holland in the 60-70s period were related. They weren't in fact. Sorry bout that.

sure it can't be justified, since many civilians will be involved as well. but shit happens in chaos.
I don't know much about these Moluk terrorists, it's not on my history books.
