Vaccinating for flu only goes so far, as there are many different types and each year usualy brings one you arent vaccinated for.

Having that said, the vaccine has its uses, you wont die of a flue. But youll still get ill from a new strand

Yeah, I don't think I'll take it.

I've never taken it, nor know anyone who has. Doesn't seem to be a thing here, is it that common in the States?
They've made it a lot more accessible, so that you can just walk in to a corner pharmacy/store rather than see your doctor for one.

As a type 1 diabetic, they always recommend it for me so I get it every year. At worst I've felt some temporary effects, but overall I've been far more resistant to colds, flus and such than my wife.

It's pretty common for people to take it. Most places with pharmacies give them and insurance usually covers it. Just keep seeing up signs about vaccines popping up so I was wondering.

Do you guys not know how viruses work? A vaccine is pretty effective.
That incredibly depends on what kind of virus it is.

Generally, virusses and bacteria have a outer membrane or cellular wall. For each different species, there are differences that can be recognised called "epitopes".
When an unknown virus enters the body, the response is very poor. The natural killer cells will react on it, but its not very specific and slow.
What needs to happen is first that Antigen presenting cells must come in contact with the microorganism. Then, once it can recognise the epitope, it can start to produce antibodies wich will be presented to clean T-cells. Witch the antibody attached the Killer-T-cells can eighter track down and kill the virus, or hunt down cells infected with the virus.

This process however, takes time because to recogise the epitope and produce the antibody. If this was the only facet of the immume response, the Flu would be an incredibly lethal disease, because its VERY fast in building up numbers.

But this is not the only facet. When the body comes in contact with a patogen for the first time, and eventually the apc's start producing the proper antibody, its not only given to T-cells, but also B-cells who are continiously produced by our body. When the infection is over, the B-cells remain dormant in the body. When the same pathogen returns at a later stage, the b-cells will recognise it, and transform into plasma cells, who produce the specific antibody they originally adapted from the APC. These antibody's can be immediatly presented to T-cells with a very potent specific response.
Added to that, not T-cells develop into killer T-cells upon receiving the antigene. Several who dont come across the patogene will also lie dormant untill it returns, and are able to attack it immediatly.

What is a vaccine : peasant edition

A vaccine is simply an attenuated virus, wich in the most dangerous cases is modified so it cant multiply. The body's immune system will respond and find the epitope on the death or barely living pathogens, and build memory b-cells, but also in great number : specific killer t-cells

So you might wonder, why vaccinate ? Why i'm a a horrible human beeing if i dont present it to my offspring, and why am i potentially endangering myself ?

3 reasons.

1) When a child is born, it gets several layers of immune memory from its mother, but thats offcourse not enough. Various patoghens that are dangerous to children arent transmitted at all, or in sufficient amounts. If you child contracts a known letal patogen but did not receive the vaccine, it will very likely not respond with specific killer -T-cells in time and will die, because you are a fucking scumbag that should have vaccinated.

2) There are a few very dangerous bacteria, that require immediate response from specific killer T-cells. For example, you cut yourself a deep cut with a rusty piece of metal. Good chance you contract one of the many Clostridium bacteria. Wich can result in Tatanus, or gas gangrene.

Tetanus causes muscle spasms like this child has (explicit photo)

Gas gangrene is a toxic substance bacteria produce in anaerobic circumstances, wich will press open the damaged tissue and allow the bacteria to rapidly grow, uncontrollable by the body's immume system. (horrible result below)

3) I said before the vaccins both create B-cells for lifelong immunity, they also provoke an immediate massive boost in specific Killer-T-Cells getting mobilised. For people with a weaker immune system, this gives an invaluable increased immune response to the specific bacteria.

Reason 3 is why they hand out flu shots. Flu has a different epitope for each genus, but they look a bit simular. For this reason you still will contract flu if you were vaccinated once cause its a different strand. But you wont die from it, like someone who never had touched a flu would.
But when someone has a weakened immune system, this is not enough.

Each year, the earlyest flu cases are examined, and vaccins are made. When giving someone with a weakened immune system this vaccine, they'll create that significant amount of specific killer T-cells against the specific strands that were injected. because of this, a person with a weak immune system will be alot safer for the comming seasons.

So, should you get a flu shot ? If its your child, yes it should have it at least once. If you are 60+, yes you should have it. If you have immuno deficiencies or a weak immune system by any reason, yes, you should have it.

If you are an adult with a normal immune system, no you dont need it. However, if something happens that kicks out the immune system and you contract the flu, you'll be in for a bad time.

Parents not vaccinating their children should be stabbed, shot, stabbed and shot again. fed to dogs, bears, putin, and then be stabbed and shot again.

Bah.

You believe these things just because our old friend science claims to have proven them?

You fool.
Actually science is very prudent on te subject. There isn't even a general consensus on whether the flu vaccine actually protects us - as in a normal risk group, not elderly, children, etc. - more...

Ok, but the general sentiment is about multiple players and the whole international break. I only agree if it's for friendlies, and even then coaches only get a small window with their teams.
