I've seen 4-4-2 fail for 2-3 seasons now because our defense isn't great and our SS doesn't contribute to midfield/build-up play.
No top club in Europe plays 2 'stay at home' strikers... it just won't work. The No.10 needs to be mobile, able to dribble etc, apply pressure. Whilst we don't have Ozil/Pastore .(Some noobs said Pastore can't play SS because he doesn't score enough goals like Quags/ADP lol). I'd rather have Marchisio or Vidal playing support and get some decent wingers to make the system work.
Sure, throw on an extra striker if we need to push for a goal, but to throw out a system that guarantees 65% possession and shuts out all attacks is foolish.

LOL This team is completely different to those teams which failed in Ranieri's 4-4-2 but also made an impact in CL with that formation by the way. You're not looking at the relevant evidence and you're sucked in by the current popularity of the 4-3-3. I already said why THIS team work better in the 4-4-2 there's no point in reflecting on previous seasons. By the way Man U have been playing an attacking 4-4-2 a lot this season its not as if its a dead and unworkable formation.

We're not a 'top club' yet (I'm strictly speaking about the team in general, not the club itself), that's why. They have way better weapons in midfield and way more quality in attack so it's pointless to compare situations. I think we need to play the formation that suits best our team, not the ones that works good for others.
The formation 4-4-2 pretty much failed last season because we didn't have good wingers and we weren't all that in centre midfield either. Also, the squad changed so what applied before is not related to what applies now: we have a better sets of forwards, and to be frank we have Pirlo. When he has space to do what he wants, he makes us much better as a team.

I was preaching consistency and I don't pretend to know it all. The more we play the more we know and now I'm beginning to know what seems to be working and what isn't. We played well against Milan in the 4-1-4-1. The midfielders had more space than they have had against smaller teams but Vucinic was isolated. He couldn't get himself into scoring positions and crosses were mainly in vain without Matri. I wouldn't play a 4-1-4-1 unless we had a target man and played someone other than Krasic and only against teams who will attack us. Matri might still be isolated but he can win the ball in the air. Either way, now we can begin to tell how much more effective the 4-2-4 is in creating chances its becoming more apparent what we should stick with. I don't really believe that it would be that vulnerable against strong clubs and the prospect of actually scoring should provide Conte with incentive to play his original formation. If it does fail during a game things should be changed around but I hope Conte game after game begins to understand the best solution and stick to his guns no matter what team we are facing.
Yeah, I don't disagree for the forwards. My point is, we didn't have both of them at the same time. Now we have Matri, Quagliarella, Vucinic and Del Piero, and that's a much complete set of forward than what we had last year.
Obviously, Krasic was very good at first, I don't dispute that but then when he lost his confidence he wasn't the same. I think that since January we kept being quite uninspiring on the wings.

This year's 4-4-2 isn't that different from last years. Defensively, it might even be weaker (Licht>Sor Pirlo+DM<Melo+Aqua). Our wingers are still Pepe and Krasic, and Krasic has gone backwards. That system was working great last year... lots of goals, until we ran out of ideas and our CB's got exposed.
