Nicolas Anelka joins Juventus boasting a distinguished career at the peak of European football. The French forward, who counts on explosive pace and lethal finishing abilities as his main weapons, will offer a wealth of experience to the Bianconeri attack.
Having begun his professional career with Paris Saint-Germain, Anelka’s potential soon attracted the attentions of Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger swooping to make him one of the first signings of his revolution in North London.
The Frenchman’s unquestionable talent enabled him to swiftly force his way into the first team fold. His devastating strike partnership with Dennis Bergkamp provided the catalyst for the club’s Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998.
Anelka’s form with the Gunners earned him a big money move to Real Madrid in the summer of 1999, where he scored decisive goals in both legs of the Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich before lifting Europe’s most coveted trophy in May
After a year at the Bernabeu and a successful summer as part of France’s 2000 European Championship winning squad, Anelka was on the move again, this time returning to his home country as Paris Saint-Germain came calling.
A two-year spell in the French capital, interspersed with a brief loan stint at Liverpool, ended when Manchester City swooped to make the forward the marquee signing of Kevin Keegan’s new-look attacking outfit.
Anelka topped City’s goalscoring charts for two successive seasons before electing to embark on a new adventure with Turkish side Fenerbahçe. After contributing to the club’s 2005 domestic title win, he then linked up with Bolton Wanderers where his consistent performances prompted Chelsea to lure him to Stamford Bridge in January 2008.
The striker racked up an impressive list of honours during his four-year stint in West London, spearheading a potent attack which lifted Chelsea to Premier League (2010), FA Cup (2009, 2010), and Charity Shield (2009) successes.
Anelka joins the Bianconeri from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua and, after spending this week acclimatising to his new environment in Vinovo, will be determined to unleash his undoubted class and skill on Serie A defences at the first available opportunity.
