Am I the only one who noticed this but on Napoli's penalty(when Lavezzi played it short and ran to the box) and De Rossi's goal, Pirlo was the one who was close to the corner to watch the short corner both times and he wasn't quick enough to close either attempt.

We should definitely put someone more energetic and faster to close down quick corners.

Pirlo should be the one sitting right outside the top of the box so if he gets the ball he is the one to relieve pressure. He shouldn't be marking anyone in or around the box. Sit outside the top of the arc if possible as an outlet if needed.

Its a signing that would make a ton of sense financially as well, seeing as we wouldnt be paying too much for him. Montolivo will never be on Pirlo's level, but the guy is an experienced and pretty decent regista.

If protected properly by Vidal and Marchisio, I think he'd do pretty well for us. He certainy knows how to pass the ball, unlike some of our other players. Just dont play him as a trequartista. Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Montolivo, Pazienza, Marrone (and perhaps) Appelt seems pretty damn stacked to me. We need plenty of cover and quality in a 3 man midfield esp when we play in Europe next season.

Too bad many on this forum automatically use the "overated, mediocre Italian" bullshit line whenever discussing these sorts of players.
Really? I've never heard such a thing...

I agree. We should put Pepe next to the corners, he'd kill those short corners.

the equation woul have to include wages as well, it's one package so whether you're ooverpaying or saving there, it would have to be looked at as a whole especially in this particular case
Sure.

That's always the case in Bosman transfer and signing Montolivo in January would be a sort of semi-Bosman.

Nothing wrong with Pirlo being one of the players to go out, but you need a second player to get out there or the attacking team should be able to work a dangerous situation.

I don't know why Italians defend short corners like this. The norther European nations tend to be pretty sharp about putting two men out to try to stop the danger.

Then again, norther Europe tends to be more focused on preventing crosses coming into the box than southern Europe.

missed connections up front, and had a hard time when vidal and marchisio didnt protected him enough

vital for us, but montolivo in games like this could be a valubale understudy

I don't like this 3-man mid with Pirlo at anchor OR Montolivo. Italy 06 was won with a 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1. Milan had Gattuso next to him. Same with Inter 10. Man U always have 2 holding mids. Bayern aswell.
It's extravagant and only Barcelona get away with it.
Eh? Pirlo is even more exposed in a 2 man mid. You gotta remember Gattuso in '06 was an absolute beast and could run for two men so Pirlo wasn't so exposed. The only reason Lippi changed from 4-3-1-2 to 4-4-1-1 was because Gilardino was sucking hard at the tournament. So Lippi just went for more attack from the wings with Perrotta and Camoranesi.

Anyway, the reason we have done so well so far this season IS because of our strong 3 man midfield. One shitty game against Roma doesnt change that.

unless we have a fucking world class tridente upfront i agree with you. 3-man mid with anchor is extravagant, we should add more attacker/amf. the forward is suffering

Why are people calling Borriello's haircut gay, that's how everyone's hair was between 1920s to 1960s or so. Our grandads all have had that haircut. It's anything but gay.
