And people who don't understand the importance of formation don't have any clue about football. Formations define your approach to the game and set the tune for the rest of the match. And also is important to use a formation that puts all crucial players in their preferred position, not out of it.
So whomever says formations aren't important shouldn't be taken seriously .
Formations aren't important.

An article on The Athletic by James Horncastle, briefly touches on the new match analyst that Pirlo specially asked for, Antonio Gagliardi.

Viscidi helped Prandelli build a match and data analysis department for the first team, which was then expanded to oversee all the age groups within the youth sector. Throughout his time at Fiorentina, Prandelli had worked with a match analyst from Opta called Antonio Gagliardi. “We took him on because I made the following recommendation to the Federation: ‘Why should we pay a company to give us Gagliardi instead of paying him ourselves? Why don’t we hire him?’.”

Gagliardi is one of the sharpest minds in the Italian game, trailblazing match analysis within the FIGC. Andrea Pirlo recently appointed him to his Juventus coaching staff and Viscidi first became aware of him when he was at SICS, one of the pioneering data companies in Italy. The pair of them devised a metric — l’indice di pericolosita, or threat index — to measure performance.
Sounds like a good get for us.

you're talking about tactics.

tactics are far more important than formation.
Aren't formations part of the overall tactics???;)

As long as we don't dish up that shit that we did last season im happy. I dont want 3 at the back but then again it's the players you have to execute it that matters...Cuadrado and Sandro as the wingbacks could make it work.

yes, "part of" is the key. that's why we played the same way with 4-3-3 and diamond during last season: we had roughly the same tactics, regardless of the formation. and that's why guardiola's teams usually play the same way, regardless of the formation, be it a more traditional 4-3-3 or a weird ass 3-1-3-3 or whatever.
