I have a feeling Pirlo will struggle against Dortmund's endless pressuring.

To me Pirlo has lost a lot of glory this year, but I am not sure if he has declined because of his age or because of the tactic. It's not like his style should be hampered by his age much though his motivation might have been.

I feel like he is being deployed even deeper down the pitch and have to break down more attack rather than create attacks. He is also not covering as much areas of the pitch anymore as before, he doesn't roam around and I think that is down to tactics rather than loss of stamina. He has likely been told to sit more deep and hold position in order to reduce room in the middle for opponents to counter and attack.

He's now more of a first pass from the defence to the midfield rather than from the midfield to a running attacker (or midfielder/Licht running through). That being said I feel like it's more of a tactical disposition where he is not allowed to flourish as much and by that I am not trying to attack the tactics or Allegri. However, with the current tactics our running patterns into the box and set ups are rather different than last years and do perhaps not suit Pirlo's game as much.

I hope Pirlo can adapt and find his game again as he will always remain a champion. Finally, I hope he remains in our club after he hangs up his boots and teaches our young kids to look and play like a WC2006 player.

Since like half of last season, he has been pretty poor. He had some freekicks to back it up last year, but this year his freekicks has turned to shid,

In terms of performance I think Pirlo has been fine. He is still making passes, he has always given the odd ball away in a dangerous position, the key difference is there are only two behind him (at most) to cover for that now.

But his role in the current team is not suited to him and we are struggling as a result.

He is picking up the ball in the "Bonucci role" in between the centre backs a lot of the time, with the centre backs going wide either side of him to create a pass. If he gives the ball away there we are in big trouble as seen against Cesena.

We also have Pogba playing far wider than under Conte, meaning less protection for Pirlo. When players run off Pirlo, which is clearly going to happen he only has two centre backs behind him for protection.

There is no way Pirlo has had the drop in ability that many are suggesting in such a short space of time, the problem is having a 35 year old who has never been fast or particularly good at defending to protect your centre backs.

Nah, Pirlo hasn't been fine. In those past few years he also did a lot of giveaways but he could make up for it with some brilliant pass or corner/FK. This season he simple doesn't do it. Without checking I remember just his goal vs Torino and FK against Olympiakos in CL.

One of my favorite players ever but his time here is up IMO. Especially since we already have his successor and he does very well this season. I think and hope he will leave in the summer, he won't accept being a rotation player and he shouldn't be starter for us next season.

Pirlo: 'A few more years still’

Italy icon Andrea Pirlo says retirement is still a 'very distant’ prospect, as he discusses his career with the Azzurri.

At 35, the Juventus midfielder is well above his team's average age of 29, but nonetheless a starter for Italy's most successful club.

Asked by the Spanish publication ABC if he intends to extend his career even further, his answer was direct.

“Of course, there's enough Pirlo to go for a while,” he said. “I still have a few years of football ahead.

“I still love this sport the way I did when I was 15. When I wake up one day and that's no longer the case, I'll retire.

“But that moment is still very distant.”

Pirlo announced international retirement after last summer's World Cup in Brazil, but went back on his decision thanks to the current Azzurri Coach.

“Antonio Conte called me and asked me if I would be willing to lend my country a hand for Euro 2016. And he convinced me.

“In 2006 we had an unrepeatable generation and that year's World Cup was our moment.”

The Juventus midfielder was also asked whether the extra-time period against Germany in 2006 could be called the most beautiful thirty minutes in the history of the Italian national team.

“Yes,” he answered. “We won a World Cup semi-final against the home team, who were the great favourites – in Dortmund, with 70,000 Germans on the stands and two goals in the last few minutes of an exceptional extra-time.

“That was an outstanding exploit.

“As for the final of Euro 2012 – well, I don't remember that one!” he joked, in reference to Italy's 4-0 defeat at the hands of Spain.

“We were very tired, but that's no excuse. Spain came out like a storm and they snatched the title in great fashion.”

Finally, the former Milan star revealed a personal record that he is fond of breaking.

“I have 25 dead-ball goals in Serie A, three less than [current Sampdoria Coach Sinisa] Mihajlovic, who holds the record at 28.

“I hope to overtake him. Scoring from a free-kick is something special.

“I learnt by watching Juninho Pernambucano, whom I still view as the best in the role.

“If I had to keep only one goal from my career, I'd go with the free-kick against Mexico in the Confederations Cup played in Brazil.”

What about putting Pirlo in the AM spot? Was just thinking about this yesterday.

I know he's a bit old to change his position. But we won't be affected by his lack of defensive product and mobility. Also, none can deny his intelligence and eye for the final pass. Vidal will return in his natural position as well.

I'm guessing cuz then defenses will just mark him, but I'd still rather have Pirlo at CAM than anywhere near our backline. Dortmund will destroy us on counters.

I would preferably see him as an AM instead of Vidal. At the very least..he will have MArchisio, Vidal and Pogba behind him to make up for his turn overs...and to be honest.. his passes and shots can be much more dangerous there. Also he will not need to be running back and forth.. but wait for the ball to attack.

Is not optimal in any way to have a 35 years old there... but is better than having him as a deep defensive midfielder.
