I think Juve fans have to be thankful that this man's leading the club and trying to get Juve back to the place they truly deserve.

I might well be wrong but I think he sacrificed his image a whole lot with the way he handled Alex' issue. I personally never thought the announcement was unplanned or amateurishly handled. IMO, it was more like a gamble Agnelli took; don't forget that Juve were still far from title contenders when he announced Alex' retirement and it could have ended really bad for him if Juve hadn't had a wonderful season resulting in a long-awaited Scudetto. I believe it was a mutual agreement between the board and the coach. At this moment I'm willing to take back my word that it was something personal going against Ale. They knew/know that Del Piero was still better than almost every attacker Juve have at the moment but they decided that the time had come to take a very hard and painful but necessary step. With the new big star imminent signing, the endless comparisons with Alex could be too much to handle for a new player who, even at normal circumstances, would have a hard time adapting himself to the new environment. The pressure of taking a legend's place and wearing his jersey could be devastating. Fans will constantly compare the new star to Del Piero. With Del Piero still in the team, even if on the bench, it might have gotten out of control. Alex has to leave because he's loved, not in a bitterly jealous fashion, but because fans are ruthless when judging new players, especially when the new player is brought to take their idol's place.
Vucinic, a 15m signing, didn't have this problem because noone expected him to be nearly as good as even an old Del Piero but a +35m signing will be someone whom the club will have vastly invested on, if he doesn't live up to the expectations, it'll risk the club's money.

Alex was surely never going to make a fuss about it and the board had certainly counted on the fact that he's a classy player who wouldn't upset the dressing room and the stands. You can't see the board clearing the matters up regarding Del Piero either simply because they can't tell the fans that they are why the club has to make this difficult decision. It's my explanation of what's happened, could be wrong but makes sense most to me now that the whole thing is over.

It's Juve, the team you've been fans of for years, least you can do is to assume that the board's intentions are rational and try to choose the best and strongest interpretation possible.

so do you think that it makes a difference? if dp is on the bench or not ? what would change if we buy cavani and he's a flop? i really don't see the logic here. people will always compare even if dp won't be here. the captain saving our ass in the last minutes (cuz he won't have time for more, we all understand that) could've been esential in the next season. what was this cost of keeping dp for another season? he wasn't playing for 9 mils a year like ronaldinho...he would've played for free. his comment that rab posted showed that the contract thing wasn't discussed with him..agnelii got the bird out of his mouth and del piero took it like a man for the whole season. he will tell more i'm sure and you will see that they didn't agreed that dp won't play for us no more.

i'm disgused by our fans who started shouting c'e solo un presidente...i can't believe this..it's so hard to see that almost every juve players got new contracts but not our symbol. he will be in another league so that boriello and bonucci can play for us. it's a fuckin disgrace... the man earned the right to retire and to play for us as long as he wants.

If Del Piero wanted to stay then he should of stayed, that's all there is to it. He wanted to play in the champions league with us one more time and its a shame he wont get his wish, he wont get to wear the 3rd star on his chest that he done so much to earn for us and Boriello will... Its a shame.

Does this mean you're still a Juventina?
I'm wondering if I was ever one.

True but the pressure would become exponentially bigger if he would sit on the bench. Fans would shout his name, the coach would feel the pressure, the new player could hardly focus, and if Del Piero saved the team's ass, the new player could lose everything in the beginning of an unjust contest.

The board is most probably aware that Alex could be still useful but as I said, they have probably thought it was necessary to take this step.

It wasn't discussed with Ale, he's leaving the club with a bitter taste in his mouth and for someone like me who values Del Piero higher than the club, nothing could be possibly sadder than seeing Del Piero not retiring in the way he'd wished for. But, it was never a decision they could ask Ale's opinion about, as awful as it sounds.

i agree with the 1st paragraph but it's kinda logic..and it's juve..you know what to expect when you come to this team (read those chapters from zlatan's book..definitely worth it) ...you're playing bad you get boo's and you want del piero in, nothing wrong with that..dp at 37-38 can change things, you seen it. he's not past it..he's not 45. that's what angers me the most...he showed he can toy wc defenders at this age and we're being robbed for a year or two of seeing him. i'm out to sleep .. peace and i love you all

I really hope that Agnelli is just trolling and will still change his mind over the summer and extend Ale's contract. I hope there is at least the faintest of possibilities for this.

Good post, it seems you live by your idols example.

I agree with the bigger part of the post. And I kind of disagree with two points.

1. I think that DP was not backstabed, but was told of the teams plans for the future and he accepted them

2. While no one thought or thinks Vuci is the one to replace DP myself included, I think Vuci was and is a lot better then the current old DP.

Other then that, agree 100%.

I'm really surprised how most of you think Agnelli is the one pushing Del Piero out. Logically, pretty sure Conte is the one who asked Agnelli and Marotta not to renew for Ale.

It's always the coach. Was Lippi when Baggio was sold, it's Conte now.
Do you think if if it ever was a debate between AA and Conte, AA wouldnt prevail?? Seriously? Esp when this decision was actually made and Conte was not a champion...

If AA wanted to keep DP, he could have kept him. Conte may like Borriello more than DP, but he wouldnt mind him on the bench.
A sun that never moans almost always deliver never hurt anyone. You think that our previous coaches chose to keep Amauri, for ex?
Our club is not like that, there is a reason we are buying relatively unproven and cheap coaches.
Demands that go against the owners will will only turn you into a new DD, Conte has accepted to fight with what we have and accepted as it is, not making such demands...

I want Del Piero to stay, but at the same time I wouldn't stand another season with him on the bench. Not good for us and certainly not good for him who probably wants to play more.

So Conte should have asked Agnelli about Del Piero's renewal in November of 2011?
