There is always hope

Raiders are surely headed in the right direction - drafting well and being able to attract solid players in FA. In the end of the day, however, IMO the ceiling for that team is set by having Del Rio as their coach. I am just not a fan and find it hard to project the Raiders as more than a 7-9 to 9-7 team, at best (it's a fine line between the two).
The AFC West is shaping up to be a pretty balanced division - Raiders and KC should build on their success from last season, Denver has lost some important pieces, while San Diego should be pretty decent if they manage to avoid the avalanche of injuries from last year. In such a situation, a 9-7 record could well be enough to top the division.
At this point, I'd say KC should be considered favorites in the AFC West, though, or at least a better, more mature team than the Raiders.

Denver is losing everyone, KC has Alex Smith, and there is only so far you can go with him. Cincinnati are chokers, the AFC East poses no threat to New England, and Indianapolis has pieces that just don't seem to fit. The only other legit threat is Houston, in my opinion.

If you think about the level of talent that the Raiders have drafted in the last 2 years, as well as hitting on nearly all of their free agent acquisitions in that time frame, I don't think it's a stretch to say that they are the 2nd most talented team in the conference.

And this is coming from a 49ers fan who would sooner punch his mother in the face than pay the Oakland Raiders any sort of complement

I think the Steelers will be a serious contender this year, even without M. Bryant. Their defense had been their Achilles heel the past several seasons but last year they showed signs of improvement as the season progressed and I for one expect that to carry over into this year. Same goes for their OL-ine - they did much better than I expected and that was with Pouncey out for the year.
As long as Big Ben, Bell and Brown stay healthy, I think only the Pats are better than Pit in the AFC.

In general, I agree that the Raiders have done many things right over the past couple of season and have amassed a really nice roster. I still think they have some roster building to do till they can seriously contend, though. They have a very talented top 1/2 to, at most, 2/3 of the roster. Where they lack is in the depth department and as the season starts taking its tall come December, that's where that lack of depth will be tested severely. That's not a problem they can't resolve with another 1-2 good years of drafting and FA acquisitions but they still aren't there, imo.

Most importantly, however, their biggest shortcoming is the coach. When it come to making the play-offs, I just can't look beyond Del Rio and put the Raiders above teams like KC, Cincy (yeah, I know they choke in the postseason but they know how to get there), Indy (with a healthy Luck) and potentially Baltimore and Houston too.
If the Raiders had a better coach, I'd put them behind only Pats and Pit in the AFC, based on roster talent.

overall I agree with you and I really feel that this team is really talented and could achieve some big teams in the near future, and even moving forward since the core of the team is really young, some pieces will come and go but the foundation of this team is almost set with young talent

It's just that there are winning coaches and then everyone else. Del Rio has not proven he can win even with a good roster - he is much more likely to lose a game his team should win than win a game his team isn't supposed to. I don't think he is a coach who elevates his roster, in fact quite the opposite - he'd make it under-perform.
All in all, not the worst coach in the league but not someone I'd expect to bring a team to that next level either.

Decent signing... The Pack definitely needed a more athletic TE. Richard is slow as shit... After all the injury in the Receiving corps last year, it will be interesting to see how good this offense can be with Nelson, Cook, Adams, Montgomery, Cobb, and Janis all healthy this year...

I've heard Eddie Lacy looks quit svelte too. That P-90X shit is working for the fat man.
