Benched means a coach doesn't trust you to play or start. That's a term for someone who gets very little playing time and none at all in important games. Someone like Zaza.
Rotation option, frequent starter, playing half the minutes of the season, etc is not being "benched the majority of the season"... But this is just semantics at this point.
The point I'm making is that Suns and others have been implying Allegri is driving Morata away by not making him undisputed starter which is just nonsense. It's called competition, and Morata was first off the bench for both Mandzu and Dybala, was also first replacement for both in case of injury or rotation, and at times was also a starter earlier in the season. He played tons, and will do so again next year.
Part of the problem that people seem unaware of is that Morata was the only player on the team capable of spelling Dybala as SS and partnering Mandzu. Which means he was needed for that as well, especially as we saw Dybala get an overuse injury near the end of the year. Morata was our backup SS and CF. But we had Zaza as well, and Morata does far better as an SS in Serie A. It's an interesting problem for Allegri to have.
