With such a relatively low transfer fee, this isn't really a lack of focus. It's an upgrade, and we're still looking for more.
Upgrade to who? Whoever is being upgraded, I'm sure it's a relative upgrade and not worth 6m of our resources at the start of our mercato. I think though Diamanti is being brought in coz he'd fit the 3511 and 433. Him and Ibra would be a strong mercato, but both players are 30 and above. That 6m could be better used, but it could be argued that it will be raised from the sale of Matri, Quag, Gio or as per today's reports, even Vucinic.

It's an upgrade over Pepe and Giaccherini, and it will allow us to adapt to more formations.

3-5-1-1, 3-5-2, 4-3-3.

Nani would be a difinitive upgrade to Pepe. But Diamanti isn't what we need if we are chasing Europe. This is at best a good bench signing. Depth. Yes. Quality that we've been after for light years? No.

But the crux of the matter is, opening the mercato with this signing. This is the kind of signing you'd make when your priorities are met. And you've done well enough to sell and buy. If we fall 6m short in a bidding war because of this, who should we blame?

I honestly think it would be a big risk if we didn't supplement the attacking department on the basis of the Llorente transfer. At least for his first season here, he's not going to be a guarantee IMO.
It seems like we are going after another forward with all those rumors about Ibra and Higuain.

Not suggesting Llorente suddenly completes Juve's attack.

Just pointing out that I wouldn't say Marotta is 'lacking focus' by looking at Diamanti, since he has already made a big move to strengthen Juve's attack.
