so let me rephrase this, Aquilani last year signed for Liverpool for 25 million, right? which I'm sure wasn't paid on the spot
now we loan him for a year with possibly a clause to buy him
we essentially would buy off the remainder of the transfer fee Liverpool was set to pay, let's say 17 million
now if we buy Martinez and paid 5 million and next year we sell him the other team will at least pay 7 million, any more would be a profit

Even though it sounds like that, it's not how it works.

We bought Martinez for 12m eur. Those 12m should be paid in 3-4 installments.
So no matter if we kill Martinez, sell Martinez for 30m, 10m, 7m or 2m, we must pay those 12m eur to Catania.

And Aquilani was bought for 20m eur which could grow to 23m eur (depending on appearances and Liverpool's success).

So what's happened, has he signed or what? The most reliable source on the internet (wikipedia) says he is a Juve player?

It's done, agent said Marotta watched him all summer and when this opportunity came to light he acted fast. He also said we wanted him in the past but the old guys took to long to get him.

Installments aren't defined as "pay half and escape" by the way. Agreed price was set for 12mln euros and it's payable over three years most likely. Yes, if we pay 5mln now we'll have to spend more - great logic this is. But we're going to spend less next season when other bill comes to Turin. Like Alen said, we have to pay that amount of money no matter what and unless we sell Martinez for 13mln or more, there is no profit for us (even when you don't look at the wages and taxes).

    you're missing the point
we have an agreement with Catania which off course must be followed but if we are not satisfied with him and we sell him on we can use that money to pay the first agreement we had with Catania
get it? a player only costs you the full amount if he stays for the duration of his contract and only if you let him go for free will he cost us 12 million
on these types of deals it's fairly easy to make a profit
if there is a market for the player

now the hard part is connecting what he said with "installments" , whats installment have to do with the mysterious magical concept of "profit"
if Liverpool paid 20 million for him like is said before and we buy him next year for 15 million he would have cost them 5
but if our deal with them is higher on yearly payments then what Liverpool and Roma agreed on they can recoup their 5 million
let's say we will sign him for 4 years and he previously signed for Liverpool a five years contract, that can do the trick
