Liverpool set to loan out £20m Italian Alberto Aquilani
Aquilani has played 28 games for Liverpool, scoring twice
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson says he may loan Alberto Aquilani out to a club in the midfielder's native Italy.
The 26-year-old has struggled with form and fitness since joining the Anfield outfit from Roma for £20m last summer as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.
"At the moment we are considering loaning him to an Italian club," said Hodgson after Thursday's 1-0 win over Trabzonspor in the Europa League.
"I didn't want to use him tonight in case the loan move goes through."
Had Aquilani featured for Liverpool in Thursday's play-off first leg, he would not have been able to play in Europe for another club this season.
Hodgson added: "For Aquilani, this year it is very important that he plays regular football every week as the number one man on the teamsheet.
"I can't promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy could help him in that respect it might be good for all parties.
"It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year."
Aquilani, who has been capped 11 times by Italy, has made only 28 appearances for the Reds, scoring two goals in the process.
He has been linked with a move to Juventus this summer, speculation that increased after Liverpool signed Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen from Juve for £4.5m last week.

Juventus have been in the market for a ball-playing central midfielder all summer, but attention has so far focused on Lazio's Cristian Ledesma.
Il Corriere understands that an option to buy Aquilani outright has also been included in the deal.
