Aquilani might be brilliant and all, but he's not going to take Marchisio's spot.
With the 4 CMs being Marchisio, Melo, Sissoko and Aquilani (?), I don't think that a single one of them has a guaranteed starting spot. Even without buying the Italian, Marchisio, Melo and Sissoko don't have a guaranteed starting place.

From now on it will be
1. Who plays better.
2. Which pair develops better understanding and gives better balance.

I think you are wrong, Fred. If my memory serves me well, Spaletti always preferred Aquilani ahead of Pizarro. In the end Pizarro was getting more playing time due to Aquilani's injuries and due to the time needed to re-gain fitness after the injury. But when healthy, the Italian was the first choice.

I'd have preferred Pizarro, though. Great player.
What? Are you sure?

I remember quite well that Pizarro was always getting the nod ahead of Aquilani even when the latter was fit. I even remember there was much debate over whether Spaletti was right to bench Aquilani for Pizarro too.

Yes and Marchisio's the best of those four. Not to mention the fact he's a true Juventino.

Aquilani was only benched because of his fitness!

IIRC I think it went the way Alen said. But there were many times when Aquilani was coming back from injury and Spalletti didn't play him straight away, so one could just as easily say Pizarro was preferred.

Marchisio is not a developed player yet. He's not a great box-to-box player nor he's a great regista.

He's very good, but he's yet to pick his style and show much more.

But you know who has shown much much much less the past three seasons?

    Aquilani.

Either my memory is really failing me or you two are wrong :D

I can almost swear that Aquilani was almost regularly benched even when fit.
    Like Andries said.

Maybe that's the last season for Aquilani in Roma you're talking about? Just before they sold him (he also spend a really lot of time injured that season). Before that I'm absolutely sure that Aquilani was a starter when fit. But for some reason I see them both playing together in my distant memory

Nah that almost never happened. :D It was always one and Pizarro was preferred because of Alberto's lack of fitness, even when on bench he wasn't ready.
