It's nothing terribly complex. Like Erik said, it's like an old wheel, only the materials are better now.

TBH I've always wondered if tyres could be made that way...creating tyres with air in them seemed to serve no purpose except to create trouble for ourselves. With airless tyres the grooves in the tyres could probably be made even deeper ie the tyres would be more durable.

Good idea but they look terrible. See image #2 --> I would never go out in my car if the tyres looked that bad
