That's being overly dismissive of the significance of Serie A, but I wouldn't debate your general point. Once upon a time if you were the best in Italy, there was an assumption you were pretty much the best in Europe. There's certainly no longer that assumption.

Given that Conte has called up Quagliarella, I can only conclude that Conte quit Juve because Quagliarella was sold.

I don't think anyone would suggest that team was better than the Sacchi/Capello teams of the late 80s and early 90s. The 2005 Milan team was extraordinary in terms of the individual talent in it, though.

But it's a player Van Gaal likes and probably would have signed this summer had he not been injured. It's also a type of player they undoubtedly need.
