Of course you don't count penalties if you want to make accurate comparisons on goal output. That's basic stuff that any football stat analyst should be aware of. Penalty goals can heavily skew any comparison because the number of penalties a player takes can vary quite a bit from season to season.

I don't consider the goal we conceded to be a big glaring mistake on his part. Could have perhaps tried to make himself bigger and hoped that the ball hits him in the leg or something. His positioning is okay and there is no time to react when a shot comes from that close.
