As fake eBay jerseys for 8-year-olds, yeah. ;)

But I hate it when people identify the Portugal NT as Ronaldo. He's in awesome form now, but he's been a major underperformer for the NT in recent years. Nani has done far more to get the team into the WC or Euro finals in recent years.

If you're going to single out players, at least pretend like you know who actually makes a real impact for the respective teams instead of what the sports drink marketers tell you.
Wtf are you talking about? Ronaldo has been scoring like a beast in 2013. Even for the Portugal NT he scored 6 goals in 6 apps.

Only recently. Ronaldo didn't score for the Portugal NT for two whole years until finally netting in the 7-0 demolishing of North Korea in the WC2010 group stages, for example.

And yet then, as now, people talked about him as he would single-handedly qualify Portugal or not. In the end, he didn't even matter to qualify for WC 2010.

Well, the thing that counts is the present so it's only normal to think Ronaldo will have a bigger impact on the game. However, this is football and nothing is known until the game is played.

that's just because portugal is a bad team overall. they have no cohesion whatsoever. now with moutinho playing in midfield it looks like ronaldo's better.

I dislike Nani too, either way. :D

But that's precisely the problem, the media & Cristiano's ego. It doesn't matter if someone else is better than him for the team, he will always get the attention. And I don't see what the big deal is with wanting to see a player you hate fail, when you don't have any affinity for other Portuguese players. No matter if he's really the star of the team or not.

The problem is this tendency to pretend that football isn't a team sport.

If you look at the impact players in most Euro and WC tournaments, they are never the players who get the product endorsements for Nike, Adidas commercials, etc. And yet everyone builds up the expectation that these "stars" are the only thing that matters in the sport.

This is the same reason people say Messi has to win a World Cup to be on Maradona's level.

And you can understand it.

Which ironically suggests that someone like a Milan Baros, who excelled at Euro 2004, has achieved more for his NT on an international stage than Messi. :shifty:

Portugal are a quality team, but Sweden are no slouches either. Of course this game is more than just Ronaldo vs Zlatan, but either of them missing out on the World Cup while someone like Abdullah Mehalil, Chong Pak Choi, or Zomba Bonga are showcasing their "talents" is a real shame.

I agree with you, but at least for me the only reason I said what I said is because of my personal dislike of the player, like I said I really don't care who the media portrays as the best. If I liked other Portuguese players then it would be different, for example I also hate Balotelli, but I like other Italian players so I don't want him to fail for the Azzurri. But I have zero reason to want Portugal to do well for any reason, and the fact that one of my most hated players is Portuguese, well... :p
