Referees and their assistants will be ordered to clamp down on abusive language and gestures in next season's Premier League. The problem, which reached epidemic proportions last term, will top the agenda this weekend at the annual referee's conference.

At the meeting, Keith Hackett, the manager of English referees, will advise all Premiership and Football League officials that any abusive language or gestures directed at them from players will result in a straight red card as of next season.

Although the problem has undoubtedly been on the rise for some time now, breaking point came last season, when Wayne Rooney let fly with a shocking tirade against Graham Poll in Manchester United's clash with Arsenal at Highbury.

Perhaps it is unfortunate for the youngster that it is he who has been informally charged by the nation with tarnishing the game's image. Players have been abusing referees and getting away with it for years. Look no further than likes of Roy Keane, Patrick Viera or Lee Bowyer for the proof.

Nevertheless, Rooney is undoubtedly a role model for thousands of youngsters and his reactions to some decisions haven't helped the belief that it is part of the game to hurl abuse at match officials.

The new zero tolerance policy is a far cry from the 'put up and shut up' attitudes of referees last season. That in itself was sending out a damaging message to young players and fans about the acceptability of such behaviour.

Only time will tell whether this approach will work or not, but there could be initial problems. The assumption is that only English swearwords will be outlawed, leaving foreign players free to vent their anger with colourful words that the officials don't understand. This uneven playing field could prove to be a stumbling block to the new policy.

The FA will be launching a poster campaign named 'Respect the Referee' to get the message across. Rooney has not been invited to spearhead the campaign.

About bloody time too

btw the one thing I like about Rugby is that the referees wear microphones. This is good because

a) you can hear what he's saying to the players (why he made a certain call etc.)

b) the players never swear at or argue with him

I've always wondered why football referees can't have the same thing.

I've got a solution for this problem of the EPL's: how about a zero tolerance policy towards Graham Poll to actually show some balls for once?

Whilst it may be wrong... What you gonna do... send off every player in world football... cause they all do it...

You can harp on about rooney etc all you like, but there aint a juve player that doesnt doit... If anything Serie A is even worse than the epl for abusing the ref

Gray : I have to disagree that they dont do it in rugby... You hear plaayers swearing at the ref all the time... This mornings all blacks - lions game being a prime example where both sets of players could be heard swearing at the ref several times...

People talk about them being role models etc... what about the number of artists at the various live 8 concerts today that swore... Or the gangster rap that youngsters continually listen to full of swearing, racist , sexist homophobic etc etc comments ??

Really its dumb, how many people in real life get pissed off at people and swear, its not something you plan careful, this is stupid because of alot of players will get sent-off for something they can hardly control, and like I said it's killing the passion goddamnit

Well, Chx, I've been searching for that stuff and I cant seem to find it anywhere. It was on people.co.uk somewhere.

Basically, it compared Fabregas and Wayne Rooney, who with only a years difference in their ages, had cemented themselves into their respective first teams. But that was where the similarities ended. It noted that Fabregas still lived with the Arsenal landlady along with Phillipe Senderos and also hitched a ride to training with him, and avoided the social scene, Wayne Rooney had just paid for a mansion, and another BMW, and was known to enjoy the occasional *cough* woman of ill repute.

It also mentioned that Fabregas didn't celebrate his 18th birthday because it was too close to a match, but Rooney was known to frequent the club scene.

Well im going to against common belief and say i fully support it.

Yob culture is getting worse in england...and imo kids like rooney provide an awful example. Keane is understandable cos he is captain etc...but Rooney, he jus swears for the fun of it ad makes keane look soft.

I also doubt that there will be a huge onslought of sent off players for swearing. I think there will be more yellow cards to start with , but eventually imo the players will gain more respect for the refs.

Imo u can have passion without swearing constantly at the ref....maybe ur team mates...but not the ref all the time.
