1. Wayne Gretzky
This guy dominated his sport in a fantastic way and his records are going to last forever.
2. Michael Jordan
Took basketball to new heights and was the difference between the team Bulls is today and what they once were. He should have finished in the fantastic way he did.
3. Muhammad Ali
Gets this place more for his character than for what he acheived in his sport. But he was the best ever and boxing will never be the same.
4. Carl Lewis
Four golds in on olympics speaks for itself.
5. Björn Borg
Five wimbledon victorys in a row is very impressive. Some say that Pete was better but you should have in mind that Björn quit at a very early age, 27 I think.
6. Jack Nicklaus
With 18 Majors spread over three decades and a number of other trophys it is strange that he is not better than sixth.
7. Mark Spitz
7 olympic gold medals in one olympics naturally puts him as 7.
8. Tony Hawk
A pretty controversial decision I guess, but this guy has done so much for skateboard. I couldn't imagine that it was possible to do a 900' before he did it, his run in the X-Games was the best the world has ever seen.
9. Ingemar Stenmark
The best skier ever.
So Borg and Lewis are there, but I can't see Nurmi anywhere, how typical of Swedish fellow... And Gretzky as numero uno!? You got to be kidding, many Soviet players were much better than him but they never got the chance to prove it in NHL... :frown:

Come on!!! Fins suck, its a know fact. ;)

Just theoretically, hockey, lets say that the Swedish players like gave the finns like 5 goals, and accidently scored one. Just to give the fins an advantage, okay? Dont you think, theoretically of course, that Sweden would turn the game around and win with 6-5? Think about it for a second, then answer.

federer's too new, though I'm a great fan. bobby fischer. though I'm no fan of his attitude, the match against spassky changed everything.
It's no wonder I failed phys ed in high school. I couldn't figure out how to queenside castle with a supporting knight.

:D Actually I was very happy when you guys won, it's because hockey "world championships" are the most overated sports event in the world along with superbowl.

But since you don't know a shit about Nurmi, shut up!! ;) :D

Tiger Woods? What has he done for me lately? The media crams him down our throats like he's some kind of second coming of Christ.

I just don't get it.

American sports media, at least, has this pedophile obsession with younger and younger athletes. They oversaturate the coverage. They give the impression that no one else is playing the sport. Tiger Woods is case and point. And I can't tell you how many local TV sports anchors who couldn't tell you how may points you get for a soccer goal  were among the first to fawn all over Freddy Adu.

An even better case and point: Jennifer Capriati. When she was a 17-year-old tennis prodigy, they put her on a pedestal and recited love poems to her -- even though she had never won a single major tournament. She couldn't handle all the intense pressure and the media saturation, so she dropped out of the sport, took up drugs, and disappeared off the radar for several years. Later, she returned to the sport -- a bit older and a little wiser, and she played better than ever -- going farther in competitions than she ever had. In response, American sports media couldn't care less and treated her with a level of apathy and disinterest you'd normally reserve for a Menudo reunion tour.

How about some alternate sports that aren't that popular? any superstars there?
The Gait brothers (Paul and Gary) had a radical impact on lacrosse from the time they played for Syracuse to when they went "pro" (what little that means in lacrosse ;) ).
