Actually it was Franco Baresi I was thinking about. Wrong formulation of the question obviously, sorry about that.

But do you really call him Kaizer Franz? I've never heard him being called that before.

Kaiser Franz originally designates Franz Beckenbauer, the greatest sweeper in football history without any doubt. Baresi is arguably the second best sweeper ever (I would put him just ahead of Scirea in my own all-time ranking). Fate willed that Beckenbauer and Baresi should have the same first name (Franz = Franco) and the same initials, so some of us Milan fans used to call Baresi Kaiser Franz as well.

Yeah maybe we could have come up with something more original, granted.

Anyway, this gave me an idea : here is a little test about famous or less famous nicknames - you will have to guess to which player each of the following nicks refers.

    1) Which brazilian player is known as "O' Animal"?
    2) Which soviet player was known as "Spiderman"?
    3) Who was "the white Pélé"?
    4) Which italian defender (who played for Roma and Samp notably) was known as "the russian"?
    5) Who was "the Swan from Utrecht"?
    6) Who was "el pibe de oro"?
    7) Who was "O' Rey"?
    8) Which french player does the acronym "JPP" designate?
    9) Who was "the Black Pearl"?
    10) Which Milan player was known as "the Golden Boy"?
    11) Which french player was referred to as "le Président"?
    12) Which Milan player is nicknamed "Ringhio"?
    13) Which brazilian player was known as "the Professor"?
    14) Who was "the genious from the Carpathians"?
    15) Which Inter player was referred to as "lo zio" (the uncle)?

The first to answer all the questions correctly wins an autographed picture of Tryphon Ivanov

    Enjoy!

    13. Because it is the colour of Holland's Royal Family since William of Orange?
That's very good but not entirely true. Or rather - what you wrote down is true, but it's not the complete story.

Right. So far these are the correct answers you gave :

    1) Edmundo
    2) Yashin
    3) Zico
    5) Van Basten
    8) Papin
    10) Rivera
    12) Gattuso
    13) Socrates
    14) Hagi
    15) Bergomi

I got confused with the "White Pélé" nickname. It probbaly designated Zico indeed. What I really wanted to ask was : who was known as "the Prophet of goal"? And the answer was Johan Cruyff. This expression was coined by the late Sandro Ciotti, a renowned italian journalist. It may have been known only in Italy though..

We call Gattuso "Ringhio" after the italian verb "ringhiare", meaning to growl. I think it suits him well as he is quite the growling watchdog.

Im a bit surprised that you guys know Bergomi or Socrates's nicknames but not the answers to number 6) and 7)...

And the "Black Pearl" was not Weah. He was called the "Black Panther" or "King George" lol. I personally would have found "the black Van Basten" most appropriate.
