New deal for Del Piero?
Tuesday 3 January, 2006
Juventus are ready to offer Alessandro Del Piero a new contract, according to whispers in the peninsula.

The club are intent on keeping the symbol until he hangs up his boots by offering him a deal which will see him take on a directorship position once he does retire.

Although Del Piero is no longer guaranteed a starting shirt in Turin, the Old Lady are prepared to offer him an extension until 2010.

Reports in Italy suggest that the club’s triad of Luciano Moggi, Antonio Giraudo and Roberto Bettega came up with the plan.

The move would be seen by many as reward for a player who has won 14 major honours since his move from Padova in 1993.

Del Piero, who has been recently linked with a shock move to Arsenal, may be tempted by the proposal seeing as his present deal runs until 2008.

The opportunity to remain at a club who adore him would also be a major factor for the now 31-year-old.

Del Piero has also recently installed himself in the club’s history books by joining Giampiero Boniperti as the outfit’s record scorer with 182 goals.

Should Del Piero accept, there is talk that he could become the outfit’s Vice-President along with Roberto Bettega when he does bring his illustrious career to an end.

2008 is two years away, he will be 34 at the time, isn't that long enough? Aren't our wage expenses high enough already, without offering another giant contract to a player who may or may not be fit enough to enjoy it?

Well I sure as hell hope the contract doesn't include higher wages than DP's current contract. I like the idea otherwise, especially "the administrative position" after his playing career is over, but 2010 seems a bit too much. 2009 would be more ideal.

Its more to Juve's benefit than to Del Piero's benefit. Through all their cut-throat dealings they are demonstrating that they are capable of a little loyalty now and then.

I would give DP a new contract, even if he would not be able to play. He can teach the others how to behave like a champion and like a real juventino. he will show the what it means to play for juve.

forza Del Piero

What's more, I'm certain he's bringing in a good amount of money for them every season to offset that salary, if not profit.
