Speaking of this guy, are there several familes named Vennegoor, but in the case of this player his family is from a place Hesseling...hence the name Vennegoor of Hesseling?? What's even more amazing is that his whole last name actually fitted on his jersey:D
Why bring on RVN when he could offer nothing at that moment. What they needed was the aerial ball into the box and for that he made the right change. Whether Kuyt should have started is another matter but the real loss was not taking Huntelaar not RVN.

In amongst all the drama of this match I think we saw the best coaching tactics from Scolari and many other coaches (Pekerman in particular take note!) of supposed 'better' teams would be shown up.

Against the Dutch who were considered favourites yet both teams line-up as 4-3-3 but Portugal much better with more balance, organisation and cohesion. To lose Ronaldo so early on and replacing him with Simao would have been a problem for many after leading and what was to come.

At HT he had a couple of choices:
1) Take off Figo for a defensive midfielder.
2) Leaves players as they were but use Deco in a more disciplined role with perhaps Figo and Simao also more restrained but keep the lone striker.

Instead he chose to sacrifice the striker when so many teams just revert to 4-4-1 and hit hopeful balls to that guy. We saw tactics such as Roma of last season; Deco pulling the strings but breaking from midfield with Figo and Simao wreaked havoc for the Dutch. Eventually Van Basten reacted by taking off a defender but that only made them more vunerable.

Absolute brilliance from Scolari tonight and whoever they miss against England - Scolari vs. Eriksson is no-brainer victory.
Anyone who considered us favourites has no clue what he's talking about. The first time we met the Portuguese was in 1990, since then (out of 9 competitive meetings) we've won only one, drawing three. We struggle to deal with the Portuguese and since they virtually had their entire team intact since they eliminated us on Euro2004 and we were playing with a bunch of youngsters, there is no way in hell you can justifiably give us the favourites role.

His name - the longest in Dutch football - derives from his great-grandmother being the last of the Hesselink family, so when she married his great-grandfather, a Vennegoor, it was decided that their descendants would bear the dual surname. The marriage brought about the merger of two farms in the Enschede region. 'Of' in Dutch means 'or' in English.

Oh for fuck's sake, that pointless bit just pushed out a perfectly useful strip-club memory from my brain

The bookmakers did today and that was a great gift. :D

From the matches over the weekend
First off kudos to Germany, Sweden were just pathetic, for all the sufferings we have gotten as Juve fans from Zlatan's supporters with all sort of crap coming from them, i was glad to see them go out. This is what the bbc commentators had to say about him. Before the game, Martin Oneill said" if you are going to buy Zlatan, Juve will ask for 15m ",I think he is the most overrated player on the planet and Larrsson has been doing his running around for him for 4 years, Lineker chipped by saying" Zlatan was once arrested for impersonating a policeman, judging by his performance in this game, he should be arrested for impersonating a football player. But Sweden were just awful and so unswedish like in play with way too many gaps for Germany to exploit.
Argentina were made to sweat for their victory and how ironic it is that the one position they are having probs with is at right back as they have the best right back in the world, they just didnt bring him in Zanetti. Is Scaloni not just the worst player in their squad? Great goal by Maxi. Mexico just got tired in the end but Pekerman messed up with his team selections and even subs but he is lucky that it worked for him as Saviola did not deserve to play as long as he did.
England have just been poor throughout this world cup but we are still here and thats what counts but I cannot see us winning it at all. Too many players are either unft or off form while Ecuador have just proved my point about south American countries apart from the top 2 as they were a waste of time

Ivanov should be banned from refereeing altogether as he is a disgrace, actually he should be charged for bringing the game into disrepute. Blatter and his men are of cos to blame when you put total incompetence in a big match like this
Van Basten like so many managers before him and no doubt after him , have cut off their nose to spite their face as it was clear that Kuyt was out of his depth and should never have played at all, let alone keep RVN permanently on the bench
But the Dutch were just diving about but Ivanov started the chaos with his bookings so early in the game
