Conte's primary target should be weeding out the silly mistakes our starting players are uncharacteristically making (Buffon, Bonnucci, Chiellini and most recently Pogba). If this severe lack of focus continues we'll continue to struggle regardless of what formation we use. We'll basically keep gifting goals like we did against Galata where we gifted one goal while using 3-5-2 and another while using 4-3-3. Lack of focus is our greatest weakness this season and we've been very lucky to get the results we've been getting with our santa claus attitude.

Assuming the silly mistakes are weeded out, the 3-5-2 would be working very well. It has been effective in every match as our plan A for years now with Bayern being the only exception. But since more teams are now parking the bus against us then we need to make a habit of the 4-3-3 switch mid-game if the need arises. With the 4-3-3 as merely a plan B we wont need to buy depth players for it we just need a full 11 and the players dont have to be world class rather just above average since they'll have to accept coming in midway through tough games.

We do not yet have a complete world class squad for either formation. But we are closer towards completing the squad for the 3-5-2 (including a powerful bench) than the 4-3-3 and our players are very much used to the primary formation.

Since we don't have a large wallet we cant expect Marotta to complete the squad for both formations but he should definitely keep his eyes open for cheap deals that could complement either plans while giving a priority to our plan A.

The 3-5-2 would be complete if we managed to buy a starter quality LWB (making Asa a great bench option), a Pirlo replacement, and a bench quality RWB (unless Isla reinvents himself) and another world class striker to partner Tevez.
The 4-3-3 would be complete (it doesn't need a bench since its a midgame plan B) would need a LB and a RW.

So depending on the market next Jan and Summer, Marotta should keep his eyes open for the best available cheap Tevez-like deals for: 1) a LWB starting spot (with ability to adapt for LB), 2) a RWB bench quality player, 3) a world class quality striker, 4) an above average quality offensive winger and 5) a pirlo replacement. The market will decide what we can get of these since we are poor.

Achieve these targets and you'll have a world class starting eleven for the 3-5-2, a very strong bench for it and a very strong bench for switching to 4-3-3 midgame if the need arises. If we continue without a Plan B we'll be in trouble when teams park the bus effectively. If we make 4-3-3 our Plan A, then we need to buy a lot of world class players for the starting eleven and an awful lot for its bench (we cant afford it).

On the 352 for a minute. Lichsteiner and Asamoah are our first choice pair. Of those 2, Lichsteiner is more impressive in his movements in getting behind the defense. Asamoah can be explosive but he is not a world class left wing back because his crossing success rate is very low and he seldom tries to get past his man. Asamoah does have a great left shot which again, is wasted on the left side. Ironically, I think Asamoah could actually do pretty well as a ride sided attacking player in a 433 because of his left foot - he could cut inside and be a real threat on the edge of the box.

Peluso, De Ceglie, Padoin, and Isla are all not good back ups. None of them poses a real attacking threat - more defensive than attacking (except Isla). Here lies the problem. If we use our subs as wing backs we are effectively playing a 532 - and we wonder why we can't create chances against teams that put 11 behind the ball.

The reason why we need an attacking mid/winger is to change the way we create chances. Our primary creative threat comes from 1 man - Pirlo. You take Pirlo out of the game, and you are left with Bonucci skying long balls into row Z or have the other mids pass the ball to Tevez with his back to goal. Lichsteiner and Asamoah run their a*ses off and our out of breath after an hour.

We need a different type of player to create chances further up the field. Such a player offers tactical options and could even be used in the starting 11 in the 352 by playing behind the striker.

If we continue to persist with the 352 at any cost, then we also need a player like Zuniga because our wingback subs are not offering much going forward. God knows why we paid decent money for Peluso and Padoin. We also should have got rid of Isla as he really is not anything like the player we hoped when we got him from Udinese.

Pepe, despite him not being world class - is sorely missed in this squad. His characteristics are missed in a big way. That tells you a lot.

So who (other than me) is keen on Jérémy Ménez? Available for free in the summer and, if reports are to be believed, Conte has given his go ahead to the cross eyed monster.

From what I've seen of him the past two years, he's developed a bit more into a rounded player after leaving Roma where he was at time spectacular and at times severely underwhelming.

Good speed, good technique at pace and in close, plays both wings, good shot and knows how to pick a man out from the wing. Decent enough work rate without it being the best and knows the league.

Having him, Pepe (lol), Giovinco and perhaps a Bonaventura of sorts would open up wing play as a possibility for us next season.

Getting him on a free would be the final stage before sainthood for Beppe, I'd say. That being said, he'll probably extend with PSG or go to England but it's a nice dream.

Thoughts?
