Yeah it was more of a team effort

Now Barzagli may never reach his top form again when he's back, plus he's well over 30

Chiellini has some seriously bad lapses in judgement, Bonucci and Ogbonna... the less said the better.

We still need the personnel though, no matter who's coaching him, I don't remotely trust Ogbonna to do even a half decent job in defence, he's just terrible

We could use a decent prospect. I won't pretend I watch the greek league but quite a few clubs are eyeing up Manolas and we seem to really want him so there is hope.

Allegri's best quality is setting a defence, so you dont need to worry about it
What I was going to say. I remember Milan's defence doing brilliantly against Barcelona a few years ago. I can't actually remember who was in their back 4, but I'm sure our defenders are better now than theits were then (besides Nesta in that game. At 35 or so he didn't give Messi an inch. Incredible performance)

I'll agree Allegri knows how to set up a solid defence, but the Barca game probably can't be used as a reliable example. They were pretty much parking the bus, had a DM or two running back with Messi as well as the World Class Nesta and at times Thiago Silva (He played at least 3 games against Barca under Allegri)

So well he got his tactics spot on with a vastly inferior team against Barca, those sort of tactics won't be deployed in Serie A ever and with Juve probably not in the CL unless we happen to draw one of the very few elite teams.

The way people neglect Bonucci in here is hilarious. They talk as if he is the worst defender in the league. He had a few bad showings last season, but when i compare to other big clubs, it's not that bad. Furthermore our three defenders often get caught high in the field and in situations where they are 1 vs. 1 because of our dominant style of play high up the pitch, and these are the worst situations for defenders. It's ridiculous to expect them to win every single duel, that's why you often search to have extra security at the back, so the opposition doesn't get a scoring opportunity from winning only one duel. I think Bonucci does fairly well most of the time, and yes he has made mistakes, but we can't afford Thiago Silva og Jerome Boateng, so i struggle to see how he is a massive dump, not even worthy of our squad..
Hopefully, we will se evel fewer mistakes this season, and it would be great if we could upgrade our defense, but it comes at a cost...

This.

Also Ogbonna barely played, judging him when he had no continuity whatsoever is simply wrong. I can remember Caceres making mistakes as well but when he got long runs out there he was amazing filling in for Chiellini. I'd have no problems even starting both of them, they'd also add some much needed pace.

He's self destructive. He's not good enough defensively to be starting for us.

He's 6'3 and slow yet he can't win jack shit in the air, he's not particularly strong. He 'blocks' shots in the most retarded way i've ever seen, resulting in god knows how many own goals. He's in the team because he can pass the ball better than Chiellini and Barzagli, and you need a guy like that in your back 3/5. He is a vice Pirlo in the sense that when Pirlo is marked out, Bonucci steps up and distributes the ball instead. But his decent at best ball playing talent is not enough to make up for his stupidity in defence.

He's obviously good enough to ride our bench, but we're not exactly mega rich and I'd rather cash in on him and move to a back 4.

I'd sooner play Vidal in defence than see an Ogbonna - Caceres/Ogbonna - Bonucci defence lmao

Ogbonna has been crap in almost every Juve game he's ever played, why does he deserve continuity? By that line of logic we should have allowed Padoin a string of games to see if he was good enough to hold down a starting spot.

Best defence for 2 years in a row now, we even made an Evra-Peluso switch, yet there's people talking as if we're bound to be overrun every game.

Milan's "goals conceded" record with Allegri as coach

2010-11 - 24 goals
2011-12 - 33 goals
2012-13 - 39 goals
2013-14 (sacked after 19 games) - 30 goals
Abate & 42-year old Zambrotta may have had a hand in that.

Confidence is a mayor factor for a player. I can remember Chiellin being absolute shit for the first 2 months of last season, yet he stayed on and got a grip on himself. Ogbonna barely played 2 games in a row but the talent is there obviously.

Barzagli who's clearly our best defender is suffering from a bad injury and nobody knows what sort of form he'll come back with

Chiellini is still very good in certain aspects but prone to some serious mistakes. So no, i'm not confident about the teams defence without Barzagli and a hit & miss Chiellini being by far our most reliable defender for now

Where is this 'talent' from Ogbonna? People still think he's some sort of 22 year old wonderkid.

The guy has the physical qualities to be a decent CB yet he seems so timid and looks lost when he's on the pitch for us.

Caceres will step in for Barzagli. Chiellini is still the same. So you're worrying about the entire defence while we miss only one player compared to last year for how long; 3 months?

Barzagli isn't the terminator. He's becoming injury prone and there's no telling how good he'll be when he comes back. And we have nobody even close to his level as a replacement. So yeah, i'm a bit worried that what was our best quality along with midfield 3 years ago is now looking to be our weak link.

Well, didn't I just use the word 'confidence'? He's got all qualities, technically and physically. Tactics can be thought but Conte was probably to busy whining about little investments, yelling at him or thinking about hat oil team would want to sign him. Ony question marks around Ogbonna are (as you rightly state) psychological. Therefor we should give him a proper run out there imo.

We have Caceres and we'll sign another CB. If that doesn't magically free you of worries, nothing will before the start of the season ;)

Well to start with I was saying I actually wanted Manolas here so yeah i'll be happier when we have a decent 23 year old prospect who already has some experience at the highest level.

My point is, if we don't get ourselves a good prospect we'll be in trouble. With our best defender on his last legs and all.

Agree there, 'though we will soon have too many if Allegri really switches things up to a 4-men defence. I'm comfortable with either Chiellini, Ogbonna or Caceres. But none of them is able to organise defence properly. Barzagli and Bonucci can, but the first is idd a question mark and the second incapable of playing with 4 at the back. That is my only worry. Else we're top of the cream, even in Europe with these defenders. There aren't any Cannavaro's or Nesta's left, I'm afraid.
