Marotta talks Juventus transfers
By Football Italia staff

Juventus director general Beppe Marotta has answered transfer questions about Edinson Cavani, Marco Borriello, Didier Drogba, Sebastian Giovinco, Marco Verratti and Mattia Destro.

In an interview with Radio Radio on Thursday, the former Sampdoria official was quizzed on their summer transfer plans.

The club are expected to make changes in attack, with Napoli’s Cavani and available Bosman Chelsea striker Drogba paired.

“Cavani is an interesting player who could be integrated into this squad, but he belongs to Napoli and [President Aurellio] De Laurentiis is able to keep a tight grip on him,” he stated.

“A lot of names are being mentioned, but I can say that Drogba is not part of our plans. He’s not a priority target.”

Juve netted Borriello at the start of the year from Roma, as a replacement for Amauri and Luca Toni, with an option to keep him for €8m.

“We had an opportunity to grab Borriello in January and we took him on loan,” he said of the player who struggled to score just two goals.

“We knew of his ability and we have an option to sign him outright which we are evaluating.”

Another player who the club will have to make a decision on is Giovinco, the attacker who is co-owned with Parma.

“We thought it was best to send Giovinco out into the provinces to gain experience,” Marotta explained.

“It has been a positive for him, he has matured and is therefore ready for any stage. We’ll soon sort out the co-ownership with Parma.”

The Turin giants are also interested in two Under-21 internationals – Pescara playmaker Verratti and Siena striker Destro.

“Verratti is a good player who has shown well over the years. He’s a youngster who is destined to become a top level player. Experience is crucial though and Verratti will have to grow gradually.

“We are interested and we could consider leaving him at Pescara for another season.”

“Destro is a really interesting youngster. We’ll make our move and hopefully we’ll get him, but if we don’t then whoever signs him would have done well.”

Both Verratti and Destro were surprise inclusions in Cesare Prandelli’s preliminary 32-man squad for Euro 2012.

WTF is up with him? has laid out practically our entire mercato strategy in the press these past 2 days.

Marrotta will never learn. He did exactly this last season at the start of the market.

Sign a Top-Level Striker

Juve's biggest weakness throughout the entire year was the lack of a world-class striker.

Juve's goal-scoring was by committee last year, with a whopping 20 players scoring at least one goal in Serie A and five players scoring in the five matches of the Coppa Italia. Alessandro Matri, Claudio Marchisio, and Mirko Vucinic were the year's joint top scorers with 10 goals apiece.

But for all these goalscorers, the Bianconeri lacked a killer instinct in front of goal—something that cost them in matches such as February's goalless draw against Siena or March's 1-1 draw against Chievo.

They took 20 shots in each match and controlled possession but only managed seven and five shots on goal respectively, dropping points to teams that they should have beaten.

Juve were second in the Serie A with 68 goals scored, but their inability to score during the fallow period in February and March that saw them garner only one win and six draws in seven games was the difference between the nervy finish they endured at the end of the season and the possibility of wrapping up the title several games sooner than they did.

The lack of a top-level striker is a weakness that the Champions League will not forgive. Having midfielders occupying three of the top five positions in your list of top scorers is just not a good sign.

Matri, while an immensely talented poacher, completely fell off the map after he equalized Juve's 1-1 draw with AC Milan at the San Siro on February 25, starting only once and not scoring again the rest of the season.

Vucinic is a talented winger but is maddeningly inconsistent and can show an amazing capacity for selfishness. Matri could have put Juve ahead late in the Chievo match, but rather than play him in, Vucinic kept going with the ball himself before being dispossessed by Michael Bradley.

Neither of these players can lead a Champions League-caliber front line.

After Juve gave up on the Robin van Persie sweepstakes after the Dutchman's wage demands proved too high, the two best options seem to be Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain (pictured) and Manchester City's Edin Dzeko.

Higuain's camp has sent mixed signals as to whether he will leave the Bernabeu, and he is also a target of Champions League winners Chelsea. Dzeko seems more certain to leave Eastlands, as his time in the starting XI was limited this year and looks to be even more so next year as City chases van Persie.

Liverpool's Luis Suarez is another possible target, as is highly touted youngster Leandro Damiao of Brazilian side Internacional, who has drawn comparisons to Ronaldo and has said that despite interest from Real, Juventus are his first choice.

There is also the possibility of Sebastian Giovinco—still co-owned by Juve—will return next season after two years at Parma.

My belief is that Damiao, who is expected to lead Brazil's forward line at the World Cup in 2014, will make his way to Turin. It depends on his transfer fee whether either Dzeko or Higuain will follow—Juve is rumored to be allotting at least €30 million for a striker move this summer.

Attackers To Bring In

Many players are being linked with the club.

Gonzalo Higuain, Robin van Persie, Edin Dzeko, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez are all great players, but one cannot think that Juventus (who refused to pay €35 million for Giuseppe Rossi last summer) would pay more than €15-18 million for one player.

This writer expect the Turin club to make moves for players that would fit their team and also their pockets. Sebastian Giovinco will probably be brought back after his breakthrough season, which leaves room for two more attackers to be signed. Any two of the following four would be great signings.

Stevan Jovetic: Very similar to Del Piero before his injury, has Champions League experience and would probably prefer to play in a team with CL football next season. Works hard for the team and can play in all attacking positions from left to right.

Fernando Llorente: Trezeguet-type of player, great goalscorer with both feet as well as his head. Works for the team and his size can be very helpful against teams that park the bus.

Roberto Soldado: A complete poacher. Has great experience in Champions League. Great with both feet and head. Works for team.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar: Similar to Llorente. Great Champions League Experience. Can score some spectacular goals and also is good tactically.

All of these players can be purchased at a maximum €20 million. Juventus could probably bargain for lower prices by offering players in the deals.

So we still have to py 5.5 for Giac?!? and Borri and Caceras 12+ ?? fmd.
Well yes, we have to pay for things. Do you go into a shop in Western Australia and they give you thinks for free? :D Giaccherini is in the Italy squad these days :shifty:

I don't think we'll go with Borriello. Attacker overload, considering we own Vucinic, Matri and Quagliarella already, will sign a 'top player' forward (Cavani/Higuain/Dzeko bracket), will also probably sign a 'baby bomber' centre forward (Destro/Gabbiadini/Boakye bracket), and also have to sort out the co-ownership of Immobile and Giovinco. Granted, Genoa have the current 'playing right' of Immobile, as the buying club, so he'll play at Genoa or wherever they decide next season.

after what he said, im pretty sure it will be giovinco plus another high profile striker(between cavaniu, destro, dzeko and someone more) in the fw departemt. Borrielo going out.

Verrati signed but loaned at pescara for a couple seasons.

I'm thinking it was an excellent loan deal that helped everyone but now we can use that 6m elsewhere. At least hold off till we can secure a big name.
